The Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art is a growing private collection of over 15,000 objects, built up over the last 16 years in London. This volume is the first in an important new academic series, complementary to the main catalogue of the collection. It consists of a detailed study of a group of early Arabic papyri, dating mainly from the eighth to tenth centuries A.D. Most are from Egypt, but the collection also includes the only known papyrus to survive from Iraq. The texts range from tax and legal matters, to business accounts and personal correspondence. Each document is transcribed and translated, and there are copious notes on historical linguistic, and paleographic issues. These documents reflect directly the realities of life in the first centuries of the Islamic era.

Arabic letters on papyrus challenge the modern reader. There are few to no diacritical dots to distinguish homographs, no systematic spacing between single words, and in the majority of cases a low degree of graphical structuring. However, contemporary readers usually read and understood these documents easily – probably because the recipient of a letter knew what to expect. The letters are formulaic, and their information packaging follows an algorithm typical for their time and content. Here formulaic letter writing means not only the reuse of the same formulae or topoi but expressing thoughts in a predictable linguistic way and order, both as a matter of readability and as one of adequacy and politeness. The main concern of this work is to discover these unwritten rules and norms behind Arabic letter writing on papyrus.

This volume of the Khalili Collection catalogues approximately 250 Arabic documents written on papyrus. Each accompanied by a plate, the entries are catalogued according to the type of document, firstly accounts, secondly legal documents, and thirdly, letters. Most of the documents date from the eighth or ninth centuries A.D. A large number of the papyri came from Fustat, the old Arab capital of Egypt. Nearly all published Arabic papyri came from southern Egypt. The Khalili collection contains the first Arabic document that has been discovered to have been written in northern Iraq. The documents are an important primary source for socio-economic history, palaeography, and diplomatics. The text is supported by notes, up-to-date bibliography, and index.
