Excerpt from Arcana Coelestia the Heavenly Arcana, Vol. 4: Contained in the Holy Scripture or Word of the Lord, Unfolded, Beginning With the Book of Genesis, Together With Wonderful Things Seen in the World of Spirits and in the Heaven of Angels In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made, by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light appeareth in the darkness, but the darkness comprehended it not. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt within us and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth (i. 1 - 5, Few know what is here meant by the Word. That it is the Lord, is evident from the several particulars; but the internal sense teaches that it is the Lord as to His Divine Human that is meant by the Word, for it is said the Word was made flesh and dwelt within us, and we beheld His glory. And because the Divine Human is meant by the Word, all that Truth also is meant which relates to Him, and is from Him, in His kingdom in the heavens, and in His church on the earth. Hence it is said that in Him was life, and the life was the light of men, and the light appeareth in the dark ness. And because Truth is meant by the Word, all reve lation is meant, and thus also the Word itself or Holy Scripture. From these particulars it is evident, what is meant by these words of the Lord, viz. That they denote the first state of the Church's perversion, which comes to pass when men begin no longer to {now what is good and what is true, but dispute with each other on such subjects, whence come falsities: inas much as this is the first state, it is said, that the end is not yet, and that these things are the beginning gf sorrows, and this state is called earthquakes in divers places, whereby is signified in the internal sense, a change of the state of the Church in part, or at first. By these things being said to the disciples, is signified, that they are said to all who are of the Church, for the twelve disciples represented all such, see 11. 2089, 2129, 2130; where fore it IS said, see that no one seduce you also, ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, see that ye be not disturbed. Excerpt from The Heavenly Arcana, Vol. 4: Disclosed Which Are in the Sacred Scripture or Word of the Lord 1984. Few can believe that there is in the Word an internal sense which does not at all shine forth from the letter; and this because it is so remote from the sense of the letter, that it is, as it were, distant as heaven from earth. But that the sense of the letter contains such things in itself, and that it is representative and significative of arcana which no one sees but the Lord, and angels from the Lord, is evident from what has been said throughout Part First. The sense of the letter bears a relation to the internal sense like that of the human body to the soul. While a man is in the body, and thinks from bodily things, he knows almost nothing about the soul; for the functions of the body are different from those of the soul, so different that if the functions of the soul were disclosed, they would not be recognized. So it is, also, with the internals of the Word. In its internals is its soul, that is, its life; and these internals have regard solely to the Lord, His kingdom, the Church, and what is of His kingdom and Church in man; and when these are regarded, it is the Word of the Lord; for then life itself is in them.
