Il volume accoglie alcuni elaborati presentati al Convegno Internazionale di Studi dal titolo La città e le case. Normative, funzioni e spazi (XII-XIV secolo) curato da Elisabetta De Minicis, Giancarlo Pastura e Giuseppe Romagnoli (DISTU-Università della Tuscia) che si è svolto, in modalità a distanza, dal 7 al 10 aprile 2021. È il sesto incontro della serie di convegni dedicati al rapporto tra architettura e città con una particolare attenzione all’edilizia domestica. Nelle città medievali, in particolare nei centri di nuova fondazione o nei borghi di espansione, con significative relazioni con le rispettive aree rurali, la casa esprime i modi seguiti per la sua costruzione materiale in armonia – o in aperta dissonanza – con consuetudini o precise normative. Gli esiti dei “modi di costruire”, spesso leggibili nelle strutture murarie, esprimono l’attenzione riposta verso le case adiacenti, verso la strada pubblica, verso gli spazi privati interni e esterni. Ogni regione privilegia modi e magisteri costruttivi, relazioni con i contesti o con le preesistenze, secondo tradizioni che indicano il consolidarsi di processi di lunga durata ma anche influenze e scambi con le aree con cui l’Europa dialoga nel medioevo. Con questo nuovo incontro di studiosi appartenenti a diverse Università italiane e straniere, si è proposto uno scambio di idee su quei fenomeni di somiglianza e diversità delle dinamiche che governano la costruzione delle case, la loro programmazione, i loro modi d’uso.

Archeologia dell’Architettura, XXVIII.1, 2023 – Archeologia del cantiere edile: temi ed esempi dall’Antichità al Medioevo Atti del Convegno (Università di Bologna, 21 maggio 2021, per via telematica) L’Archeologia del cantiere edile prende in esame le tracce lasciate dai costruttori durante il loro operato e i caratteri dei manufatti prodotti, concentrandosi principalmente sulle murature, al fine di comprendere il funzionamento di un cantiere in azione, in particolare l’organizzazione tecnico-logistica, le operazioni eseguite per il suo impianto, la programmazione del processo edilizio (filiera), le opere provvisionali, le macchine, i ruoli e le responsabilità delle persone coinvolte. Inoltre, indaga il mutamento di questi aspetti sul lungo periodo e cerca di spiegarne i motivi. Il convegno dal titolo “Archeologia del cantiere edile: temi ed esempi dall’Antichità al Medioevo”, tenutosi il 21 maggio 2021 su piattaforma Microsoft Teams, è stato organizzato dal Dipartimento di Storia Culture Civiltà (DiSCi – Università di Bologna), nell’ambito delle attività didattiche e di ricerca promosse dall’insegnamento di Archeologia dell’architettura (Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni archeologici) e dal Laboratorio di Archeologia dell’architettura. Ogni relatore si è occupato di questo tema in relazione a uno specifico contesto territoriale e limitatamente a una determinata fascia cronologica. Inoltre, Giovanna Bianchi ed Andrea Augenti hanno discusso i risultati più importanti, offrendo spunti di riflessione e stimolando ulteriori ricerche.

Città di grandi artisti, quali Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, Pietro e Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Domenico Beccafumi; città di santi come santa Caterina e san Bernardino e dei papi Alessandro III, Pio II, Pio III e Alessandro VII; fulcro di attività bancarie, formazione universitaria e sede dell’Ospedale Santa Maria della Scala. Non solo, Siena presenta altre specificità: l’assenza di corsi d’acqua, la creazione del centro politico-economico bassomedievale al di fuori della cinta romana, una spiccata internazionalizzazione durante parte del XIII sec. Ma qual era la forma fisica della città che ha generato le condizioni per la nascita di queste peculiarità? Con questo volume si tenta quindi di dare corpo allo sviluppo urbano di Siena, focalizzandosi su un’area delimitata e un ambito temporale circoscritto, con particolare attenzione al rapporto tra aspetti geomorfologici e struttura urbana.

News from Texts and Archaeology, edited by Cornelia E. Romer, contains twelve of the important papers given at the 7th Fayoum Symposium in Cairo in October/November 2018, most of them dealing with archaeology, some with texts. They mirror the focus of this 7th Symposium, which for the first time took place in Egypt, and which highlighted the archaeological work recently carried out in the Graeco-Roman Fayoum by Egyptian and international missions. Papers include a presentation of the first Hellenistic gymnasium archaeologically attested in Egypt and excavated by the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo, and a catalogue of the Hellenistic and Roman sculptures which come from a secure provenance in the oasis. One paper traces the history of the water-wheel in Egypt, an invention that changed the landscape radically, and shows the sophistication of water supply in the villages in general. Together with the papers on Greek and Demotic texts found in the Fayoum, they all draw a picture of the multi-cultural society of the Egyptian countryside in the Graeco-Roman period. Of special interest are the three maps attached to the volume as an extra, which show the changing levels of the lake in the north of the oasis through the pharaonic and Ptolemaic/Roman periods.
