Emerging Iconographies of Medieval Rome examines the development of Christian iconographies that had not yet established themselves as canonical images, but which were being tried out in various ways in early Christian Rome. This book focuses on four different iconographical forms that appeared in Rome during the eighth and ninth centuries: the Anastasis, the Transfiguration, the Maria Regina, and the Sickness of Hezekiah—all of which were labeled “Byzantine” by major mid-twentieth century scholars. The trend has been to readily accede to the pronouncements of those prominent authors, subjugating these rich images to a grand narrative that privileges the East and turns Rome into an artistic backwater. In this study, Annie Montgomery Labatt reacts against traditional scholarship which presents Rome as merely an adjunct of the East. It studies medieval images with formal and stylistic analyses in combination with use of the writings of the patristics and early medieval thinkers. The experimentation and innovation in the Christian iconographies of Rome in the eighth and ninth centuries provides an affirmation of the artistic vibrancy of Rome in the period before a divided East and West. Labatt revisits and revives a lost and forgotten Rome—not as a peripheral adjunct of the East, but as a center of creativity and artistic innovation.

Gli studi sul vetro medievale, nel nostro Paese, hanno goduto, nel tempo, di alterne fortune; ad un ‘basso continuo’ (i resoconti di scavo, dove contesti di vetro vengono pubblicati assieme a tutti gli altri oggetti e le presentazioni di specifiche associazioni o tipologie, in occasione di Congressi, anche dedicati, come quelli dell’AIHV), hanno fatto da contrappunto pochi ‘assolo’, cioè a dire pochi studi di sintesi: tentativi di analizzare i problemi legati alla produzione vetraria e alla circolazione dei manufatti in vetro in un quadro storico sociale, ma anche geografico, che superasse la pur lodevole descrizione ragionata di un singolo caso, di uno specifico ritrovamento. Il volume di Margherita Ferri si pone, indiscutibilmente, in questa seconda categoria. Innanzitutto perché, pur facendo perno (come contesti principali di riferimento) su Venezia, non parla solo di essa (ed opportunamente il riferimento alla Serenissima ha lasciato il posto, anche nel titolo, ad un più pertinente accostamento geografico, cioè l’alto Adriatico). Poi, perché, a ben vedere, questo libro non parla neppure soltanto di alto Adriatico, dal momento che tale spazio è inteso come una sineddoche, rappresentandoci molto bene, nei casi noti e studiati, quel particolare in grado di descrivere e comprendere il generale. Così Venezia (parente ingombrante in una qualsiasi storia del vetro in Italia), ritorna nel giusto alveo che le compete: solo riposizionando correttamente le lancette dell’orologio (la concentrazione della produzione a Murano nel XIII secolo, la nascita di un sistema produttivo dai caratteri pre-industriali, la fama che ne consegue), la storia del vetro nell’alto Adriatico è in grado di muoversi in uno spazio più articolato e fluido, ma storicamente più corretto e scientificamente più promettente (Sauro Gelichi)

The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and will be concluded in October 2020. The University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume brings together the research presented at the first nEUMed workshop, held in Siena on 11-12 April, 2017. The aim of the workshop was to draw up an initial survey of research and related work on the project, one and a half years after its inception. The project is composed of several research units. Each unit covers an aspect of the interdisciplinary research underpinning the nEU-Med project, each with their own methodology. For this first volume of results, it was decided not to give an account of all the work carried out within all the units, but to select those lines of investigation which, at the end of the first year and a half, have made it possible to articulate and develop an interdisciplinary research strategy.

Tomo I – Il territorio circostante la città di Grosseto è stato al centro di numerosi progetti di ricerca condotti da studiosi afferenti all’Università di Siena e alla Soprintendenza Archeologica per la Toscana. Il filo conduttore dei saggi che qui presentiamo è dunque la peculiarità di un territorio e di questo modesto villaggio che finirà per assorbire tutte le funzioni della città etrusco-romana di Roselle. Tomo II – Lo scavo di una città come Grosseto è un’occasione per comprendere i processi di trasformazione di un villaggio rurale che nei secoli centrali del Medioevo assorbì progressivamente tutte le funzioni della città etrusco-romana di Roselle. This open-access book surveys how digital technology can contribute effectively to improving our understanding of the past, through a sensory engagement based on the evidence of material culture. In particular, it encourages specialists to consider senses and human agency as important factors in studying ancient space, while recognising the role played by digital tools in enhancing a human-centred form of analysis. Significant advances in archaeological computing, digital methods, and sensory approaches have led archaeologists to rethink strategies and methods for creating narratives of the past. Recent progress in data visualisation and implementation, as well as other nascent digital sensory methods, means that it is now easier to explore and experience ancient space from a multiscalar perspective, from the individual body or single building to the wider landscape. The chapters in Capturing the Senses: Digital Methods for Sensory Archaeologies present innovative methods for representing an embodied experience of ancient space, simulating (but not recreating) ancient behaviours and social interaction. Chapters cover topics including the potentials and pitfalls of visualising, recreating, and re-enacting/experiencing the senses in Virtual Reality environments and also digital reconstructions and auralisations of ancient spaces to study sound sensory perception. Overall, the book demonstrates that multisensory approaches can give a new perspective on how ancient spaces were intended to be used by inhabitants to fulfil a series of purposes including conveying messages and regulating movement. This is an open-access book.
