Archery in Medieval England is an account of how archery developed amongst ordinary people in England and Wales after the Norman Conquest. In the 300 years after that traumatic event, Englishmen became such skilled archers that they could defeat the most heavily armoured noble knights in battle after battle – feats of arms unequalled by the combatants of any other European country. Here Richard Wadge describes how men used bows and arrows in their everyday lives in the centuries between the arrival of the Normans and the start of the 100 Years War in Edward III's reign. Many contemporary records provide accounts of the illegal use of bows and arrows: unlawful hunting is shown to have been particularly important as a school for the development of battle- winning archery skills. In the process of investigating these accounts, light is shed on the background to the stories of Robin Hood and other outlaws. Evidence from archaeology, manuscript illustrations, church wall paintings and carvings provides an insight into the actual bows and arrows and their use. Richard Wadge shows how the archer came to symbolise the spirit of the ordinary Englishman, how he became a forerunner of John Bull and how he remains part of the national identity even today.

The centuries-long history of the legendary and deadly English longbow is explored and explained in a “classic work . . . an engaging, enjoyable read” (De Re Military). From the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, the longbow was the weapon that changed European history more than any other. In the skilled hands of English and Welsh archers it revolutionized all the medieval concepts and traditions of war. It was the winning factor in every major battle from Morlaix in 1342 to Patay in 1429. This well-researched study of the English longbow from its early development until the Wars of the Roses offers fascinating insight into a game-changing tool of warfare and the men who wielded it in an age of courage, vitality, and endurance—culminating in an enthralling reconstruction of the engagement in which it was last used: in 1940 France at the outbreak of World War II.

For more than three centuries the longbow was the dominant weapon in English military thinking, and England's archers were a force to be reckoned with on battlefields across Europe. From the famous battles of Crecy and Agincourt to forgotten skirmishes in Norfolk no serious fight was complete without the hum of the bow string. The study of the history of English archery could not be complete without reference to the vast bank of primary sources, documents written in the medieval and Tudor periods, which speak of the lives of the archers, their equipment, conditions, pay, and experiences. This book contains transcripts of 51 primary sources including, for the first time, all 23 parliamentary statutes relating to archery and the manufacture of bows and arrows passed between 1285 and 1571, miscellaneous primary sources from letters, household accounts, and medieval chronicles, and three extracts from larger sixteenth-century works arguing over the supremacy of guns or bows at a time when the military use of the bow was in terminal decline. Together these sources offer a glimpse into archers and archery during the Hundred Years' War, the Wars of the Roses, and the Tudor campaigns.

This book chronicles the overwhelming importance of the military archer in the late medieval period. The longbow played a central role in the English victory at the battles of Crecy and Agincourt. Completely undermining the supremacy of heavy cavalry, the longbow forced a wholesale reassessment of battlefield tactics. Richard Wadge explains what made England's longbow archers so devastating, detailing the process by which their formidable armament was manufactured and the conditions that produced men capable of continually drawing a bow under a tension of 100 pounds. Uniquely, Wadge looks at the economics behind the supply of longbows to the English army and the social history of the military archer. Crucially, what were the advantages of joining the first professional standing army in England since the days of the Roman conquest? Was it the pay, the booty, or the glory? With its painstaking analysis of contemporary records, Arrowstorm paints a vivid portrait of the life of a professional soldier in the war which forged the English national consciousness.

A Complete Recreation of the Deadliest Medieval Arm Dominating medieval battlefields for more than two centuries but requiring long and arduous practice to command, the English war bow and its battle shaft are the symbols of the rise of British power in Europe. Despite being crafted for hundreds of years and wielded by generations of archers, no example of the war bow--the military version of the longbow--exists, outside of a single broken limb. Now for the first time, expert craftsmen use all available evidence including applied archaeology to unlock the secrets of the English war bow. Historian Hugh D. H. Soar is joined by Mark Stretton, master blacksmith, and Joseph Gibbs, bowyer, in order to demonstrate how a war bow and its associated arrow heads and shafts may have been constructed and used. In addition to showing the complete manufacture of a bow from tree selection to stringing and how specialized arrowheads were forged and attached to shafts, Secrets of the English War Bow provides information on the actual performance of the war bow, including the bow's effectiveness against various materials and, for the first time, its use against moving targets, since bows were often drawn against mounted soldiers. Armed with this new information, Soar provides an analysis of both successes and failures of the war bow in several important battles. Illustrated in color and black and white, Secrets of the English War Bow provides an invaluable service for those interested in medieval military history, archery, and technology.

Much of England's success in the Hundred Years War is attributed to England's use of large infantry formations made up of commoners armed with the longbow. A variety of factors including the Black Death and the amalgamation of several cultures, created a society in England with a relatively high degree of social mobility. The demands of war against a much larger opponent combined with England's relative social mobility made it possible for England to incorporate low born archers into their professional military community which previously only included the aristocracy and the gentry. The success of these common archers on the battlefield continued to increase the level of social mobility available to low born men. English "Yeoman Archers," as they came to be known, became the embodiment of a new social order in which ability was more prized than birth. They had a dramatic impact on the character of warfare in the fourteenth century and the development of the western way of war as we know it today. CHAPTER 1 - THE ARCHER'S TALE * CHAPTER 2 - ENGLISH SOCIETY IN THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY * The Three Estates of Man and the Feudalism. The Realities of English Society * Wealth and Social Mobility * Government * English National Identity * Plague and War in the Fourteenth Century * The Plague * The Hundred Years War * CHAPTER 3 - THE ENGLISH MILITARY COMMUNITY OF THE LATTER FOURTEENTH CENTURY * The Social and Economic Realities of the English Military Situation in the Fourteenth Century * Training * Why Join the Army? * Conclusion * CHAPTER 4 - THE ENGLISH ARCHER * The Yeoman Archer * Hunting in the King's Forest * Outlaws, the Robin Hood Legend, and Royal Pardons * Conclusion * CHAPTER 5 - THE ARCHER'S IMPACT ON WARFARE AND SOCIETY * CHAPTER 6 - CONCLUSION * BIBLIOGRAPHY In order to understand the archer's place in society one must first have some understanding of society as a whole. Therefore, chapter 2 begins with a brief discussion of English society in the fourteenth century. This discussion addresses how English society tried to define itself utilizing the three estates, and how the realities of English society differed from this idealized model. Additionally, there is a brief examination of the major events that shaped the fourteenth century. Chapter 3 narrows the focus to examine the English military community of the fourteenth century. It is necessary to discuss the structure of the military community and the social aspects that determined who served as a man-at-arms and who served as an archer. It will also be necessary to examine the social and military realities of the English position at the beginning of the Hundred Years War that necessitated their reliance on archers. These discussions will establish a firm understanding of English society and the English military community and allow for a more detailed analysis of the social status of English archers. The fourth chapter examines the social status of English archers as well as the specific aspects of English culture that allowed England to create a massed archery capability when no other western monarchy could. This study will conclude with an examination of the archer's impact on the western way of war and English society.

This is a collection of the three most recent books in Martin Archer's exciting saga of Cornwall's Company of Archers at the dawn of Britain's rise as a military and merchant powerhouse. The action is non-stop as arrows fly, swords clash, women are bedded, nobles and churchmen are gulled out of their coins, and the French and Venetians are blamed for things they did not do. Medieval times were a real life game of thrones. There was little else to do.
