"The paragons of the Italian Renaissance - Brunelleschi, Alberti, Michelangelo, Bramante among them - were almost without exception architects, not only in practice but also in the private spheres of their imaginations. Their architectural plans, fantasies and models, as much as the finished buildings, are the records of their extraordinary creative endeavours." "Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi, Venice, this book presents a panorama of civil and religious masterworks and the ideas behind them, by the geniuses who changed the face of European architecture, in the form of their fascinating models, plans and designs. Essays by Carl Frommel, Richard Krautheimer, James Ackerman and other distinguished contributors consider architecture, architectural modelling and urban planning in late medieval and Renaissance Italy, reaching as far back as ancient Rome to uncover the roots of this great tradition. The works are analyzed historically from the dual viewpoint of Renaissance humanism and modern critical reappraisal. The essays cover French and German Renaissance architecture as well as Italian, and also consider architecture's relationship with other arts, such as stage design, painting and sculpture. Numerous designs, projects and manuscripts, some never before published, are reproduced and described." "Architecture provided a medium for some of the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance, and their work set the pattern for all subsequent development in Europe. The idiom they created is here given expression in the most complete and detailed corpus ever published on the subject."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Dieser Band stellt die erste umfassende Untersuchung italienischer Architekturzeichnungen aus der Sammlung Cronstedt im Nationalmuseum Stockholm vor.

The dissertation looks at architectural theory in early modern Italy through a history of its drawings. It examines a group of early-sixteenth-century drawing books, made in and around Rome, that comprised reproductive drawings based on circulating drawing exemplars from the late fifteenth century. The drawing books are identified as study tools made by artisans who aspired to the practice of architecture. The study illuminates the broader shift toward drawing as the primary means of architectural design.

"There may not be any book on architecture so delightful to dip into; one wishes there were a pocket edition to take on an Italian vacation-not only for its information and vision but for such pleasant reminders as that the citizens of Treviso carried Tullio Lombardo's friezes through the town in triumph before they were attached to a building."-D. "The chronology of the Italian Renaissance, its character, and context have long been a topic of discussion among scholars. Some date its beginnings to the fourteenthcentury work of Giotto, others to the generation of Masaccio, Brunelleschi, and Donatello that fl ourished from around 1400. The close of the Renaissance has also proved elusive. Mannerism, for example, is variously considered to be an independent (but subsidiary) late aspect of Renaissance style or a distinct style in its own right."

In the mid-1880s The Builder, an influential British architectural journal, published an article characterizing Renaissance architecture as a corrupt bastardization of the classical architecture of Greece and Rome. By the turn of the century, however, the same journal praised the Renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi as the ?Christopher Columbus of modern architecture.? Victorian Perceptions of Renaissance Architecture, 1850-1914 examines these conflicting characterizations and reveals how the writing of architectural history was intimately tied to the rise of the professional architect and the formalization of architectural education in late nineteenth-century Britain. Drawing on a broad range of evidence, including literary texts, professional journals, university curricula, and census records, Victorian Perceptions reframes works by seminal authors such as John Ruskin, Walter Pater, John Addington Symonds, and Geoffrey Scott alongside those by architect-authors such as William J. Anderson and Reginald Blomfield within contemporary architectural debates. Relevant for architectural historians, as well as literary scholars and those in Victorian studies, Victorian Perceptions reassesses the history of Renaissance architecture within the formation of a modern, British architectural profession.
