Julius Shulman, one of the great masters of modern architectural photography, is the preeminent recorder of early California modernism. By 1927 when he was sixteen, Shulman was already using the family Brownie box camera to document his Southern California surroundings and experiences; in 1936, his professional career was launched when he sent Richard Neutra some uncommissioned photographs of the architect's Kun House. Shulman went on to document the famous Case Study House Program (architects included Charles and Ray Eames, Pierre Koenig, and Eero Saarinen) and also the architecture of the 1930s through the 1980s, especially that of Southern California, but also country- and worldwide. His subjects included the buildings of R. M. Schindler, John Lautner, Raphael Soriano, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, and Oscar Niemeyer, among many others. Through his work, Shulman defined the image of Los Angeles and framed the architecture of the time for a global audience. In addition to an overview of Shulman's career and photographic oeuvre, this book emphasizes Shulman's method of "constructing" photographic views. These constructions, which complemented his innate ability to compose striking photographs often transcend reality to capture the spirit, time and place of a work of architecture. An analysis of architecture's visual presentation examines not only the media of the era - John Entenza's Arts & Architecture, for instance - but also the work of Shulman's photographic contemporaries.

Photographing Architecture And Interiors written by Julius Shulman and has been published by Balcony Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-04 with Architecture categories.

Julius Shulman's long career photographing great architectural works with depth, passion, drama, and an instinct for the architect's intentions has ensured his present status as one of the world's preeminent architectural photographers. His eloquent photos interpreting the structures of Richard Neutra and other early modernists helped the viewing public to understand these revolutionary buildings, and brought prominence to modernist practitioners who might otherwise have been considered eccentric. Frank Lloyd Wright once said that no better photos had ever been taken of Taliesin West than those by Shulman. Photographing Architecture and Interiors, published in 1962, is Shulman's first book, and he still considers it to be his most genuine reflection on the profession and on his own artistic philosophy. This title is an exact reprint of that now-classic publication. All of Shulman's famous photographs have here been reproduced from original prints, giving the images a crispness and luminosity not seen even in the 1962 edition. The introduction by Richard Neutra, perhaps Shulman's most important client and avid supporter, has been preserved; also included is a new foreword by Shulman himself.

Building With Light written by Robert Elwall and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Architecture categories.

Ever since its invention, photography has enjoyed a close and mutually stimulating relationship with architecture - an association underlined by one description of photography as "building with light". So well established is this link that photography is now regarded as the easiest and most reliable means of making architecture and its ideas accessible to a wider public. Our first, sometimes our only, impression of a building often comes from a photograph, and the skilled photographer can help us to see even the most familiar structures with a fresh eye. This book offers a lively exploration of the development of architectural photography and some of its key themes. From the earliest examples of the genre in the nineteenth century to today's digital revolution, Robert Elwall skilfully focuses on the changing aesthetic of the medium worldwide. Included are such topics as the early influence of architectural drawing; the growth of specialist photographic firms documenting the nineteenth-century building boom; the influence of photography on both architectural practice and history; the invention of half-tone reproduction; the role of photography in the spread of Modernism; the impact of colour photography during the 1970s and 1980s; and the increasing use of computers to shape a new direction. Authoritatively written by a world-renowned expert and illustrated with arresting images from collections throughout the world, this study is essential reading for anyone interested in architecture, photography and the history of their special relationship. In 1988, photographer Sandy Sorlien set out on a series of journeys to document the rich architectural heritage that America is losing to the cheap and banal design aesthetic of tract housing, strip malls, and big-box stores. Her seven-year odyssey took her over 90,000 miles of back roads to every state in the Union in search of homes that reflect and define the region in which they stand. After making over a thousand house portraits, Sorlien has chosen one representative image from each state and collected them in this volume.
