The Architectural Record' during its midcentury years of 1942 to 1967, was a riveting centre of architectural journalism following and participating in the changing development of the architectural profession. Through the Second World War and the Korean War that brought functionalist modernism to the foreword and through the emerging consumer market of the 1950s, the magazine?s editors? mission was one of ?helping this new-born architectural infant to learn to walk, talk, and attain his full power.? Through archival research, this study deals with the particular history of the Record editors, publishers and contributors along the course of US midcentury modernism and the developing ?image of the architect?.

Excerpt from The Architectural Record, Vol. 46: An Illustrated Monthly Magazine or Architecture and the Allied Arts and Crafts; July-December 1919 There is some basis for the claim of those who decry originality in the monumental architecture of public build ings on the argument that its character has been crystallized by the experience of ages. But surely our homes should not all be alike. We cannot, in their case, make a fetish Of standardization or Of current fashions and, at the same time, hope to attain any real atmosphere Of art, which is the aim Of every good de signer. Excerpt from The Architectural Record, Vol. 3: July, 1893 July, 1894 The architects of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are almost alone in hav ing gone back to Colonial times for their models, and the result has vindi cated them very handsomely. Inde pendence Hall is not a beautiful build ing, but for the purpose of a World's Fair its historical interest outweighs its architectural disadvantages, and the modifications the architects have made in it are faithful to the spirit of the original. The reproduction for the State building of Massachusetts of a well-known Colonial mansion, in the Hancock house, is about the most dis tinguished success of the whole series. It has a positive architectural as well as a positive historical interest and in several important respects it sets a model for current domestic building. While it was impossible to make it congruous with all its surroundings, it is in perfect keeping with those of its immediate surroundings that were un der the control of its projectors. The inclosure and the quaintness of the old fashioned garden explain to us the avidity with which Hawthorne seized upon such scanty materials of romance as the New England of his time afforded him, and form a little chapter of Colonial history more vivid and in structive than the written page. The American Architect From The Colonial Era To The Present written by Cecil D. Elliott and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-11-13 with Art categories.

The later Colonial era saw a need to replace the buildings hurriedly assembled by earlier colonists, but competent builders were difficult to find. Capable housewrights were usually well paid and many became respected and prosperous members of their communities, but craft apprenticeships and a gentlemanly taste were two of the primary requirements for becoming an architect. As the profession developed, architects in the Northeast initiated efforts to distinguish between their work and that of housewrights and builders. This work is a history of the development of architecture as a profession in the United States. It is divided into four chronological sections. Section One covers the beginnings in Colonial times before 1800 when there were no identifiable professionals. Section Two examines architecture from 1800 to the Civil War, a period during which the first architects appeared. Section Three considers the profession from the time of the Civil War to World War I and the strengthening of the profession's status. Section Four covers architecture since World War I up to the present. Each section discusses the training of architects, standards of practice, general management methods, information sources, minority participation, and other aspects of professional operation, with special attention given to the relationship between the profession's development and the social history of the periods.

Home Heat Money God written by Kathryn E. O'Rourke and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-07 with Architecture categories.

"The idea for this book came about when architectural historian Kathryn O'Rourke and architect / photographer Ben Koush collaborated on a piece on postmodern architecture for Texas Architect. The two enjoyed working together--with O'Rourke writing and Koush providing visuals--and, together with UTP, developed the framework for a similarly rich, book-length treatment of modern architecture in Texas. Conceived to be accessible to a general readership, this project explores in photographs and words approximately fifty years of Texas modern architecture, from the 1930s to the 1980s. As O'Rourke writes, "In this period, modern architecture and Texas grew and changed at an astonishing pace. The state became a significant force in national and international affairs, chiefly as a consequence of the oil industry and the presence of politically powerful Texans in Washington, D.C. Major buildings, many designed by regionally and nationally-prominent architects, followed the money in the state as the influence and image of Texas grew. Relentless ambition, a forward-looking attitude, and a strong sense of place combined to make Texans particularly receptive to modern architecture's implication of newness, its future-oriented image, and its capacity to reinterpret historical forms in novel ways." While many books on Texas architecture focus on one building type (residential architecture, courthouses, and so on), this project adopts a broader lens. A dozen chapters presented under four thematic headings explore buildings through a variety of frameworks--there are the inescapable forces of heat and money, essential functions like caregiving and government, and groupings for leisure and multi-building sites such as museums and campuses. In each of these sections, the authors present a "constellation" of buildings, with one central example and several supporting ones. So, for instance, the "God" chapter presents O'Neil Ford's Little Chapel in the Woods in Denton as its main building, alongside the Antioch Baptist Church in San Antonio and the Congregation Rodef Shalom in Waco. This sort of geographical diversity, with big cities sitting alongside smaller and lesser studied places, runs through the volume as a whole"--
