Excerpt from Architectural Studies in France The interests of the artist and the antiquary are Often very nearly coincident, but in some cases one has to give place to the other. The author must often have felt this dilemma, yet though he has generally given way to his artistic instincts, his book has still a considerable theoretic value. It is true that the expectation which may be inferred from some of his remarks, that research might assist in developing the elements of a genuine modern style of architecture, has hitherto been un fulfilled; and the great skill which a few modern architects have shown in the resuscitation of mediaeval styles seems to have proved any such hope for the present fallacious. Nevertheless. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from How France Built Her Cathedrals: A Study in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries In 1793, man again thought to set up a barrier between himself and his past, and he shattered the art treasures of a thousand years and tore down' the cathedrals of Cambrai, Arras, and Avranches; he tore down Cluny, the greatest Romanesque church in the world, Cluny the civilizer, that had removed from agriculture its stigma as serfs' work. Man fancied that to shatter and demolish was to build. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Short History of Architecture, Europe It is to be remembered also that the subjects of this enquiry are in themselves full of interest. The buildings which we study are always singularly attractive and often of extreme beauty. The beauty is increased, and the attractiveness of the less beautiful is multiplied many fold by minute examination into the ways in which their builders and sculptors did their work. In the study of any fine art, gain in the power of distinguishing the better from the less good is accompanied by a still increasing power of enjoying the best. It is better to sit at home with a plan and twenty photographs, with a sense of what that architecture truly means, than it is, without that sense, to visit the cathedral itself or all the cathedrals in France. The sense of what is fine in architecture is to be gained by the study of the buildings themselves; and the more, the better. It is not too much to say, however, that a few weeks rightly spent, among the best examples and with a knowledge of what to look for, is worth many seasons of travel under other conditions. It is therefore with some confidence that this book is offered as a guide to those who would study architecture for themselves. Excerpt from Study of the Orders, Vol. 1: Instruction Paper Some buildings are the logical outcome of the needs they are designed to serve, or of the nature of the materials used in them; others have been evolved by the artistic genius of different peoples, and have gradually been perfected in the advance and progress of civilization and art. Such buildings possess an aesthetic or artistic character, and are the natural expression of particular peoples at a given stage of their civilization: The Greeks and the Romans, the most cultivated nations of ancient times, brought their architectural forms to a very high degree of perfection. The destruction of ancient civilization by the Fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century A. D. And the spread of Christianity, caused the complete disappearance of Greek and Roman architecture during several centuries. This period is called the Middle Ages and lasted until the 15th century, but dur ing this-time a new civilization was developing and producing an architecture, which in certain countries (notably in France) attained a very high degree of perfection. First published in France in 1943 and translated for English-speaking readers in 1961, Le Corbusier Talks with Students presents advice and commentary from the master of modernism for young architects-to-be. In chapters ranging from "Disorder" to "The Construction of Dwellings" to "A Research Workshop," Le Corbusier discusses his views on architectural history and offers opinions on the future of the profession, while touching on his own projects for the Villa Savoye, the Cité Universitaire, and the Radiant City. Topics such as architecture's role in our directionless society; the balance between spiritual values and technical factors; and the importance of space, proportion, and color are explored by this renowned architect, and still resonate today, almost 50 years later. Our reprint of this classic text is a facsimile of the 1961 edition, now available as an affordable paperback.
