What can you do with a degree in architecture? Where might it take you? What kind of challenges could you address? Architects After Architecture reframes architecture as a uniquely versatile way of acting on the world, far beyond that of designing buildings. In this volume, we meet forty practitioners through profiles, case studies, and interviews, who have used their architectural training in new and resourceful ways to tackle the climate crisis, work with refugees, advocate for diversity, start tech companies, become leading museum curators, tackle homelessness, draft public policy, become developers, design videogames, shape public discourse, and much more. Together, they describe a future of architecture that is diverse and engaged, expanding the limits of the discipline, and offering new paths forward in times of crisis. Whether you are an architecture student or a practicing architect considering a change, you’ll find this an encouraging and inspiring read. An intimate project, this publication arises out of an anxiety towards the fast-changing built landscape of Singapore. Its objective is to look at place, memory, and nostalgia through architecture, while attempting to understand the images of Singapore in the collective minds. How do we, as agents and recipients of the built environment, come together to decide the landscape that generations after our own will inherit? We have gone about assembling individual memories of architects and users who are both, in their own ways, image-makers of the city. The result is a collage of both the physical and the sensory coming together to inform something about a spirit of intersecting times. In its most celebrative tone, the images and anecdotes in this book recognize what we have. Yet, this is not meant as an evasion of criticality. Instead, we encourage readers to take an unprejudiced look at this city we call Singapore, before searching for their own meaning of place. We see this publication as a tribute, as well as a reminder of the choices we make to strengthen our national identity. The publication features fourty buildings in a diversity of styles that were built in di erent decades: shopping malls, offices, instituitional spaces, public housing, and private residential developments. Theses featured buildings sit alongside two republished essays-- by veteran architects William Lim and Alfred Wong respectively--and eight new interviews with architects and an architecture photographer based on their works in Singapore. Lastly, anecdotes on the ground from residents, tenants, shopkeepers, and security o cers have been inserted throughout the pages of the publication to complete this collective gathering of voices.

As the digital economy changes the rules of the game for enterprises, the role of software and IT architects is also transforming. Rather than focus on technical decisions alone, architects and senior technologists need to combine organizational and technical knowledge to effect change in their company’s structure and processes. To accomplish that, they need to connect the IT engine room to the penthouse, where the business strategy is defined. In this guide, author Gregor Hohpe shares real-world advice and hard-learned lessons from actual IT transformations. His anecdotes help architects, senior developers, and other IT professionals prepare for a more complex but rewarding role in the enterprise. This book is ideal for: Software architects and senior developers looking to shape the company’s technology direction or assist in an organizational transformation Enterprise architects and senior technologists searching for practical advice on how to navigate technical and organizational topics CTOs and senior technical architects who are devising an IT strategy that impacts the way the organization works IT managers who want to learn what’s worked and what hasn’t in large-scale transformation

-Lists 22 contemporary and unique completed house designs for modern Singaporeans who live in tropical environments -Features full-color photography throughout, as well as plans, elevations, diagrams and sections -Provides indepth narratives, elucidating how HYLA builds houses that are punctuated with light and blended with nature -Showcases a clean, contemporary and spacious page design that mimics the light-filled aesthetics of the projects We live in a densely populated world where statements are being made wherever we look. Architecture is forever sprouting taller, bigger, louder, as if the buildings themselves are vying for our attention. Where, then, can the people of a busy city like Singapore find their hidden haven? For those at HYLA Architects, that escape is the home. HYLA's approach to building houses is singular and precise - a marriage of pure forms and dynamic spaces. Exteriors are strong and simple, interiors are thoughtful and sensuous. The works within the pages of this spectacularly beautiful monograph detail the firm's perspectives in sculpting homes that are distinct and sincere. Clarity is the core tenet, and one of the guiding principles of their architectural practice. All of HYLA's projects come with careful consideration for tropical Asian living - always seeking to achieve both modernity and timelessness that reflect culture and society. An exploration of strategies that seamlessly bring together exterior and interior, their creations delicately incorporate climate, surroundings, and, where possible, nature into their composition. While the values of strength, clarity and dynamism remain constant, each site and client differ, and naturally, so do the homes. Consciously, HYLA's houses are often punctuated with light. Using different kinds of filters in various materials, HYLA explores fixed and operable screens to diffuse light, welcome circulation of air, and safeguard privacy. These screens, interchangeable to create patterns on the façades, can be reflective of the resident's mood, allowing these homes to truly take on the owner's individuality. HYLA strives to push the boundaries of modern tropical architecture, continuously seeking to create new typologies that accommodate contemporary Asian lifestyles in a moderated environment.

The Architect as Magician explores the connection between magic and architecture. There is a belief that a greater understanding of the meaning of magic provides insights about architecture and architects’ design processes. Architects influence the effects of nature through the making of their buildings. In an analogous condition, magicians perform rituals in an attempt to influence the forces of nature. This book argues that architects could gain much by incorporating ideas from magic into their design process. The book demonstrates through historical and current examples the important influence magic has had on the practice of architecture. The authors explain how magic helps us to understand the way we infuse architecture with meaning and how magic affects and inspires architectural creation. Aimed at architects, students, scholars and researchers, The Architect as Magician helps readers discover the ambiguous and spiritual elements in their design process.

Occupying Architecture written by Jonathan Hill and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-07-28 with Architecture categories.
Occupying Architecture focuses on the importance of the user of architecture. It emphasises the cross-currents between design, theory and use, and the need for a wider cross-cultural approach to architecture. Beginning with the architect, the book proceeds to explore models for architectural practice that actively engage the issue of use, and concludes with examination of the user. The authors draw on illustrations and examples from London, Las Vegas, Barcelona and Bruges to discuss how and why architecture ignores the user. The apparant contradictions between the 'producer' and the 'product' of architecture are highlighted before the activities of the architect and the actions of the user are explored. This book illustrates that architecture is not just a building: it is the relation between an object and its occupant.
