"Based on a new concept in architecture, this volume shows how to use the findings of behavioral psychology to create more meaningful architectural designs. It is one of the first synthesis by a practicing architect of what has been learned about the interaction of architecture and human behavior. In the process the author looks at old problems in new ways, adding a new dimension to present architectural practices ... Although its approach to architecture is unique, the book is primarily a practical work. Its main points are solidly supported by a detailed behavioral design process model--a step-by-step procedure for using behavior in contemporary design"--Jacket.

Architecture And Social Behavior written by Andrew Baum and has been published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1977 with Architecture categories.

This book describes a program of research concerned with the social and psychological effects of architectural design. In each chapter a different aspect of resident experience and behaviour is described, allowing an organized development of tests of the primary hypotheses. By organizing the book in this manner, it is hoped that the impact of architectural design and social density will be highlighted. The studies reported in this book were conducted at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and at Trinity College.

Choice Architecture written by Avani Parikh and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-22 with Architecture categories.

From Vitruvius in the 1st century BCE on, there has been an attempt to understand how architecture works, especially in its poetic aspect but also in its basic functions. Design can encourage us to walk, to experience community, to imagine new ways of being, and can affect countless other choices we make that shape our health and happiness. Using the ideas of rational choice theory and behavioral economics, Choice Architecture shows how behavior, design, and wellness are deeply interconnected. As active agents, we choose our responses to the architectural meanings we encounter based on our perception of our individual contexts. The book offers a way to approach the design of spaces for human flourishing and explains in rich detail how the potential of the built environment to influence our well-being can be realized.

Impact Of Occupants Behaviour On Zero Energy Buildings written by Francesca Stazi and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-27 with Architecture categories.

This book highlights the importance of human behaviour in the building design process, with a focus on the construction of zero-energy buildings. It reports on and discusses the strategies the authors have adopted to develop behavioural models, and explains how to integrate them into building design. The analyses and findings presented in the book are supported by novel experimental data derived from building monitoring projects carried out by the authors’ research group. Further, the book suggests key methodologies and modelling approaches. The authors subsequently address occupants’ behaviour in zero-energy buildings from an energy perspective. They investigate many different aspects of the interactions between users and buildings devices, from assessing the triggering factors of occupants’ behaviours, to discussing modelling and simulation approaches. Methods for acquiring and analysing experimental data are presented, as well as a discussion on objective and subjective factors that trigger occupants’ behaviour. Other content includes: experimental investigations from real case studies to assess occupants’ interaction with building devices; an assessment of the driving factors that trigger human actions to identify the key parameters in the behavioural models; and critical suggestions on monitoring and modelling approaches to optimise data acquisition and modelling methods. The guidelines presented here will allow designers and researchers to improve the accuracy of their simulations of buildings energy performance, and support both building design and management processes. It will be of particular use to researchers involved in the development of behavioural models, as it presents experimental data and a comprehensive overview of behavioural modelling. The book will also be of interest to students who are studying the behavioural component of integrated building design.

Behavioral Formation written by Roland Snooks and has been published by Actar D, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-27 with Architecture categories.

Emergent processes of formation create intensive, volatile, intricate, complex phenomena. These processes have come to define our contemporary understanding of the nature of becoming, which stands in contrast to established notions of architectural design and authorship. The design research of Roland Snooks is a speculation on the relationship between emergent processes of formation and architectural design intention, and explores the strange specificity of an architecture that is drawn out of this interaction. This research operates within a larger architectural and cultural concern for complex systems and their role in algorithmic design processes. The original methodological territory carved out from this larger milieu is the articulation of a design process in which architectural intention is embedded within emergent processes.

How Structures Work written by David Yeomans and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-19 with Architecture categories.

Structural engineering is central to the design of a building. How the building behaves when subjected to various forces – the weight of the materials used to build it, the weight of the occupants or the traffic it carries, the force of the wind etc – is fundamental to its stability. The alliance between architecture and structural engineering is therefore critical to the successful design and completion of the buildings and infrastructure that surrounds us. Yet structure is often cloaked in mathematics which many architects and surveyors find difficult to understand. How Structures Work has been written to explain the behaviour of structures in a clear way without resorting to complex mathematics. This new edition includes a new chapter on construction materials, and significant revisions to, and reordering of the existing chapters. It is aimed at all who require a good qualitative understanding of structures and their behaviour, and as such will be of benefit to students of architecture, architectural history, building surveying and civil engineering. The straightforward, non-mathematical approach ensures it will also be suitable for a wider audience including building administrators, archaeologists and the interested layman.

The Architecture Of Good Behavior written by Joy Knoblauch and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-07 with Architecture categories.

Inspired by the rise of environmental psychology and increasing support for behavioral research after the Second World War, new initiatives at the federal, state, and local levels looked to influence the human psyche through form, or elicit desired behaviors with environmental incentives, implementing what Joy Knoblauch calls “psychological functionalism.” Recruited by federal construction and research programs for institutional reform and expansion—which included hospitals, mental health centers, prisons, and public housing—architects theorized new ways to control behavior and make it more functional by exercising soft power, or power through persuasion, with their designs. In the 1960s –1970s era of anti-institutional sentiment, they hoped to offer an enlightened, palatable, more humane solution to larger social problems related to health, mental health, justice, and security of the population by applying psychological expertise to institutional design. In turn, Knoblauch argues, architects gained new roles as researchers, organizers, and writers while theories of confinement, territory, and surveillance proliferated. The Architecture of Good Behavior explores psychological functionalism as a political tool and the architectural projects funded by a postwar nation in its efforts to govern, exert control over, and ultimately pacify its patients, prisoners, and residents.
