Munich is a city that enjoys contradicting itself. Full of old-world charm, it is also one of the most modern and prosperous cities in Germany, one that combines natural splendor with bustling modern efficiency. It is also a beautiful city whose blend of ancient and modern architecture coexists with a lively contemporary cultural scene. Munich's cultural and economic importance has created an environment that fosters innovation. The evidence can be found in the many new post-modern architectural landmarks profiled in this authoritative little guide. Several of the city's newest and most interesting governmental, residential, and commercial buildings are covered. Color photographs and a site map are included for easy use by tourists and professionals alike. Joachim Fischer has run his own communication and design company since 1990. He edited Cool Restaurants Berlin (3-8238-4585-3) published by teNeues last fall. Another title in teNeues' authoritative architecture and design series Showcases buildings erected in Munich during the last few years by means of short profiles accompanied by color photographs and a site map 200 colour photos

Architectural collections are warehouses of knowledge: they are resources for historical plans and buildings, and they offer insight and ideas for the designs of tomorrow. However, in the age of computer-aided design, the sketches, plans and models that were once available for research and exhibitions are being replaced by bits and bytes on a variety of storage media whose lifetimes have no guaranteed length. How will that change the profile of a classic architectural collection in the time to come? How will the history of architecture be written in the future, and how will exhibitions be presented? The Architekturmuseum at the Technical University in Munich has one of the largest special collections of architecture in Europe. This publication presents its complex history while placing it in the context of other prominent international collections. Selected examples are used to discuss questions about collecting, research and the exhibition of architecture in the future.

Munich And Memory written by Gavriel D. Rosenfeld and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-10 with Architecture categories.

Munich, notorious in recent history as the capital of the Nazi movement, is the site of Gavriel Rosenfeld's stimulating inquiry into the German collective memory of the Third Reich. Rosenfeld shows, with the aid of a wealth of photographs, how the city's urban form developed after 1945 in direct reflection of its inhabitants' evolving memory of the Second World War and the Nazi dictatorship. In the second half of the twentieth century, the German people's struggle to come to terms with the legacy of Nazism has dramatically shaped nearly all dimensions of their political, social, and cultural life. The area of urban development and the built environment, little explored until now, offers visible evidence of the struggle. By examining the ways in which the people of Munich reconstructed the ruins of their historic buildings, created new works of architecture, dealt with surviving Nazi buildings, and erected new monuments to commemorate the horrors of the recent past, Rosenfeld identifies a spectrum of competing memories of the Nazi experience. Munich’s postwar development was the subject of constant controversy, pitting representatives of contending aesthetic and mnemonic positions against one another in the heated battle to shape the city’s urban form. Examining the debates between traditionalists, modernists, postmodernists, and critical preservationists, Rosenfeld shows that the memory of Nazism in Munich has never been "repressed" but has rather been defined by constant dissension and evolution. On balance, however, he concludes that Munich came to embody in its urban form a conservative view of the past that was inclined to diminish local responsibility for the Third Reich.

The Architecture Under King Ludwig Ii Palaces And Factories written by Andres Lepik and has been published by Birkhäuser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-10 with Architecture categories.

Ludwig II of Bavaria (1864—1886) is more internationally known for his royal palaces than hardly any other regent of the 19th century. They are the symbol of a personal architectural vision which, to this day, fascinates people from all over the world. However, the fame of his palaces has eclipsed other construction activities in the Kingdom of Bavaria: urban developments, hospitals, and schools, theatres and museums, but also factories, railway stations, apartment blocks, churches, and synagogues were created under his regency. This book, for the first time, sheds light on the broad architectural activities in this epoch. Essays and overview illustrations of the building projects of the time provide insights into the diversity of the then building culture and, at the same time, open up a new perspective on the royal palaces.
