Il tema vastissimo della costruzione in pietra affrontato in una particolare tipologia regionale, quella delle chiese con cupole in asse, si apre, in questo volume, a considerazioni che investono la produzione architettonica nel suo complesso, senza rinnegare la continuità con una tradizione storiografica che accomuna il corretto inquadramento storico dell'edificio alla conservazione dei molteplici messaggi veicolati dalla sua struttura. Senza risalire agli specialisti ottocenteschi, il tema ha, anche in tempi recenti, attirato più volte l'attenzione degli studiosi. Fra gli saggi monografici, dopo i contributi rispettivamente di Krönig, Berucci e Simoncini al convegno di Storia dell'Architettura del 1955, giunsero gli studi di Venditti negli anni Sessanta, collegati allo studio sulle influenze bizantine nella regione, e in seguito quelli di Laganara (1975) e Cardamone (1976). Un nuovo impulso offrirono la mostra Alle sorgenti del Romanico con il catalogo curato da Pina Belli D'Elia (1975), gli studi mirati di Mongiello (1988) e Ambrosi (1990), fino al più recente lavoro di Fiore (1997); e la stessa de Cadilhac aveva già affrontato il tema in due contributi del 2005, in questa sede ampliati e integrati con nuovi risultati e rilievi. Rispetto alle pubblicazioni precedenti, il lavoro di Rossella de Cadilhac analizza il tema sulla base di schedature tratte dall'esame diretto degli edifici. Grazie ad una stretta aderenza alla costruzione, vista soprattutto nei suoi aspetti tipologici, spaziali e tecnici, secondo la migliore tradizione degli studi di storia dell'architettura e restauro, il libro passa in esame un numero vastissimo di esempi selezionati in Terra di Bari, attraverso rilievi inediti di piante, sezioni, apparecchi murari, elementi decorativi, che costituiscono un corpus completo e affidabile del tema di studio (dalla Presentazione). [Italiano]: I Milites Baroli censiti nel Catalogus Baronum costituiscono il punto di partenza di questa indagine sulla formazione, le caratteristiche e l’evoluzione dei poteri signorili nella Valle dell’Ofanto e nella città di Barletta tra età normanna e primo angioina, con particolare attenzione all’élite militare e politica territoriale e alle sue relazioni con i sovrani del Regno. Per essi a lungo i casati locali organizzarono e controllarono il territorio ofantino, favorendo il sinecismo esercitato da Barletta nei confronti della vicina Canne. L’Autore riflette sulla pervasività del potere signorile, sul rapporto dell’élite locale con le fondazioni ecclesiastiche d’Oltremare e la Terrasanta, sulle peculiarità dell’intervento esercitato dai principali casati nei luoghi del potere politico e religioso e sulle caratteristiche della preminenza. Particolare attenzione è posta nei confronti delle dinamiche del conflitto, latente nella società cittadina, come elemento fondamentale per la comprensione del funzionamento dei meccanismi del potere in ambito locale e sovralocale. Il volume si inserisce in questo modo nel dibattito sulla struttura sociale e politica delle città dell’Italia meridionale e sui poteri signorili nel Regno di Sicilia normanno, svevo e primo angioino, di cui Barletta costituisce un caso complesso e di grande interesse./[English]: The Milites Baroli censused in the Catalogus Baronum constitute the beginning of this study on the formation, characteristics and evolution about lordship powers in the Ofanto Valley and particularly in the city of Barletta between the Norman and early Angevin age. Through a focused and complex rereading of the existing documents, the volume analyzes the structure of the Barletta society with particular attention to its military and political élite and to the relationship with central power. Structured during the XII century consequently the intervention of the Norman crown, for the southern sovereigns the milites of Barletta organized and controlled the Ofanto Valley, favoring the unification of the Apulian center with civitas and the bishopric of Canne. Strongly put to the test in the secular relationship with the crown, the élite of the Apulian city is here probed through the study of prosopographic profiles and the pervasiveness of the power used by main local military families. In this point of view, is analyzed both the relationship established from time to time with the ecclesiastical foundations of Outremer and with the Holy Land, and the quality of the intervention in the main places of political and religious power and the characteristics of supremacy. In that sense, particular attention is focused on the dynamics of the conflict, hidden in the city society, as a basic element for understanding the inner workings of power in the local and supralocal context. In this way, the volume is part of the debate on the social and political structure of the cities in the south of Italy and on the aristocratic powers in the Kingdom of Sicily, of which Barletta is a complex and very interesting case.

This book explores the contribution of southern Italy and Sicily to the crusades and crusader states. By adopting the theme of identity as a tool of analysis, it argues that a far more nuanced picture emerges about the relationship than the dismissive portrayal by William of Tyre in his Chronicon, which has largely been accepted by later historians. Building upon previous scholarship in relation to Norman identity, it widens the discussion to evaluate the role of more fluid and evolving Italo-Norman and Italo-Sicilian identities, and how these shaped events. In so doing, this book also argues that the relationship between the territories needs to be considered in different dimensions: direct involvement of leaders and rulers versus indirect engagement through the geography of southern Italy and Sicily. Over time, and as identities change, these two dimensions converge, making the kingdom itself a leading participant in crusading.
