The Universal Exposition in Shanghai asked exhibiting nations: Which city model can you imagine for the future? This is Italy's response. Italy took up the challenge, setting up a pavilion on the "city of the future", entitled "The City of Man," in which man becomes the main character, where the concept of living plays a leading role. A building which used new eco-friendly materials, environmentally friendly, and forward-looking. Moreover, it was the theme of the Expo itself which launched this challenge. A pavilion that has now become a symbol of Italian know-how, thus renewing traditional Italian architecture in the imagination of visitors. And inspired architecture was certainly one of the keys to sowing new seeds of confidence for the future. A future in which it is possible to imagine new communities, better cities and a better life in relationship with the country and the world. Inspired by the general theme of the Expo, "Better city, Better life", the success of Italy's participation will be even more important if, thanks to these proposals, the idea of a city and a better life will become clearer and more achievable. A city that never cease to surprise, always mixing a balanced economy, architectural masterpieces, wellness, taste, respect for the environment. Italy is, more than others, capable of a strong proposal for a 'type' city because it is in its past that serves as the starting point in looking for inspiration.

Time has become an increasingly important topic in urban studies and urban planning. The spatial-temporal interplay is not only of relevance for the theory of urban development and urban politics, but also for urban planning and governance. The space-time approach focuses on the human being with its various habits and routines in the city. Understanding and taking those habits into account in urban planning and public policies offers a new way to improve the quality of life in our cities. Adapting the supply and accessibility of public spaces and services to the inhabitants’ space-time needs calls for an integrated approach to the physical design of urban space and to the organization of cities. In the last two decades the body of practical and theoretical work on urban space-time topics has grown substantially. The book offers a state of the art overview of the theoretical reasoning, the development of new analytical tools, and practical experience of the space-time design of public cities in major European countries. The contributions were written by academics and practitioners from various fields exploring space-time research and planning.

This book presents and compares the principal results of a PRIN research project conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, by the Universities of Rome, Naples and Palermo. Working within diverse geographic environments and different spatial, economic and social situations, the investigations explored the meaning of a new entity of settlement: the extended city. This conjecture on the form of the city and its substance served as a setting out point for the patient configuration of research models and design investigations united by a common premonition: the city “could have assumed another form, but above all that it was or could have been something else”. The book presents a critical summary of the more detailed publications produced by the Research Units. At the same time, it is also enriched by critical contributions authored by external scholars, whose pressing arguments complete the subjects explored.
