«La ricerca lavora sugli strati profondi del Museo Hedmark di Hamar che incarna in modo paradigmatico il procedimento di messa in relazione del tempo passato con il tempo presente e futuro», così scrive Eleonora Mantese nella prefazione. Tra i progetti più significativi di Sverre Fehn (Kongsberg, 1924-Oslo, 2009), il museo di Hamar è sintesi di un preciso principio compositivo che si traduce nel dare forma costruita alle idee fondanti della sua architettura, il rapporto con la storia, l’attacco a terra, la copertura. Qui il maestro norvegese opera mediante un atto di “ricostruzione tendenziosa”, cercando di dare senso alle tracce disseminate dal processo di metamorfosi della storia senza però riproporre lo stato originale del manufatto. Lo fa costruendo un percorso sospeso che si inserisce all’interno del vecchio edificio, trasformandolo. La narrazione dell’antico edificio viene risignificata dall’astrazione del nuovo linguaggio che rifugge la ricostruzione/riparazione per fare del nuovo e dell’antico un ensemble compiuto. Attingendo agli schizzi e ai disegni prodotti da Fehn lungo l’arco della sua carriera, il libro indaga le diverse parti di cui si compone l’opera recuperando quel mondo di riferimenti e quella cosmogonia di simboli che è all’origine del modo di pensare dell’architetto norvegese.

In the nineteenth century, new cemeteries were built in many Italian cities that were unique in scale and grandeur, and which became destinations on the Grand Tour. From the Middle Ages, the dead had been buried in churches and urban graveyards but, in the 1740s, a radical reform across Europe prohibited burial inside cities and led to the creation of suburban burial grounds. Italy’s nineteenth-century cemeteries were distinctive as monumental or architectural structures, rather than landscaped gardens. They represented a new building type that emerged in response to momentous changes in Italian politics, tied to the fight for independence and the creation of the nation-state. As the first survey of Italy’s monumental cemeteries, the book explores the relationship between architecture and politics, or how architecture is formed by political forces. As cities of the dead, cemeteries mirrored the spaces of the living. Against the backdrop of Italy’s unification, they conveyed the power of the new nation, efforts to construct an Italian identity, and conflicts between Church and state. Monumental cemeteries helped to foster the narratives and mentalities that shaped Italy as a new nation.

Edwin Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew are two key figures of British architecture in the second half of the twentieth century, their most important work was the book Tropical Architecture in the Dry and Humid Zones, a manual compiled from the experience acquired in Ghana and Nigeria between 1949 and 1960. The manual is the formalisation of a design method specific for tropical areas, the search for a renewed rooting of modern architecture, not based on formal research or the revival of folkloric themes, but on the close relationship between environmental support and anthropic intervention. The design method has its roots in African colonial history and was the result of a long process of adaptation of Western modernist ideas to the extreme climatic conditions of the African continent. A cosmopolitan localism based on the application of science in humanistic terms and capable of combining global and local dimensions was translated into an approach that respected the deep roots of tradition while providing innovation in terms of architectural solutions.

Questa monografia, con testo introduttivo italiano e inglese, è dedicata all'opera di Daniel Libeskind, polacco di nascita ma statunitense d'adozione, architetto dalla formazione eclettica (ha studiato musica e filosofia ancor prima di interessarsi all'architettura) e consacrato sulla scena dello star system internazionale grazie alla realizzazione nel 1998 del Museo Ebraico a Berlino, vero e proprio manifesto del suo pensiero. Introdotto da una prefazione di Antonino Saggio il volume, nella prima parte suddivisa in cinque capitoli corrispondenti alle fasi progressive della formazione di Libeskind, ne ripercorre l'opera tramite un saggio critico e la analizza nel suo peculiare linguaggio. La seconda parte presenta i progetti più rappresentativi realizzati nel periodo 1987-2007, ognuno dei quali è documentato attraverso una scheda informativa corredata di testo e materiale grafico e fotografico in gran parte inedito.
