Excerpt from Archivio Storico per la Marche e per l'Umbria, 1888, Vol. 4Ranghiasci prima degli altri due non e, se bene il Mazzei l'abbia nel dar fuori la propria Memoria preceduto di due anni, senza ragione: io considero la Illustrazione storicoartistica del Ranghiasci come unica fonte a cui il Mazzei ed il Laspeyres attinsero. Quegli, in fatti, nella lettera al Sindaco ed ai Consiglieri del municipio eugubino, la quale precede la Memoria, dichiara d'aver raccolto le notizie sulla storia del palazzo del Gonfaloniere e dei Consoli da uno scritto che il marchese stesso gli favori, ed e appunto quello che fu inserito nell'Archivio italiano; questi accetta quanto il Ranghiasci da per indiscutibile, se bene non provato coll'autorita dei documenti. Ambedue, quindi, seguendo la stessa guida, incorsero nei medesimi errori. Dei quali sarebbe da far rimprovero al marchese Ranghiasci, se non si sapesse che ad una sbagliata conclusione egli giunse, mosso dal desiderio di far credere che un eugubino, Matteo di Giovannello di Maffeo, fu l'architetto di quei palazzi, e di circondare di maggior gloria il nome di questo artista, noto fuori di Gubbio per opere insigni, ma nella citta sua conosciuto al pari di quello di un geometra o di un mensurator, come indicano i documenti del tempo.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Aggiungasi inoltre che molti sfuggirono alle indagini sue, credo per una certa leggerezza che gli era propria nell' instituire codeste ricerche; cosi spiego tal fatto, non volendo nè pur pensare che quei documenti omessi gli siano realmente capitati sott' occhio e che per non averne conosciuto il va lore non siasi curato di farne'le copie. Di questa imperfezione della sua raccolta di documenti su le arti a Gubbio s' era anche avveduto l' egregio amico Oderisi Lucarelli che di lui dicendo poche ma affet tuose parole Archivio ecc., Vol. I, fasc. IV, pag. 747 nelle quali ritrasse l'uomo efficacemente ope roso e costantemente studioso, espresse il desiderio che qualche amico suo si assumesse l'incarico di sceverare dai suoi numerosi mss. Quanto alla mede sima [storia dell' arte} si riferisce e con qualche in dispensabile ritocco ne curasse la stampa Sul mo do col quale l'ho eseguita una sola cosa ho da no tare; ed è che quando i documenti non hanno in sè alcun valore, ma servono soltanto a indicarci una data per la biografia dell'artista, io non li ho ripor tati per intero; ma mi sono semplicemente limitato a citarne la data e il luogo dove trovansi.
