A Climatologia Geográfica fundamenta-se na Meteorologia, que estuda a atmosfera e seus fenômenos e que se preocupa com as leis físicas, a fim de determinar as condições físicas sob as quais se manifestam os fenômenos ditos meteorológicos. Por isso, a atmosfera pode ser considerada como de domínio pulsante. Portanto previsível, considerando que as interações que nela se processam, nada mais são do que a busca do equilíbrio que se altera com a energia térmica proveniente da luz e engendrada nessa camada. O equilíbrio é alterado e os atributos do tempo refletem-se por meio dos movimentos da circulação geral da atmosfera, das massas de ares, das tormentas, ou seja, essas manifestações são as consequências primárias das forças propulsoras que comandam a circulação nas diversas escalas de grandeza. Por essa razão, há climatólogos que afirmam que a atmosfera é a esfera mais imprevisível. Imprevisível é a magnitude de fenômenos que se desencadeiam a partir do acúmulo de energia. Dessa forma, podemos citar os eventos climáticos extremos. Eles são previsíveis, embora a localização e a intensidade não. O homem já aprendeu bastante sobre a física da atmosfera. As previsões do tempo estão cada dia mais precisas, porém, resta-nos ainda compreender e aproveitar mais o clima como um recurso. Parece que caminhamos nessa direção. A principal preocupação da obra foi resgatar as características fundamentais das massas de ares que atuam no Brasil e também mostrar a importância das cartas sinóticas para a climatologia Geográfica.

Brazil marked its centennial as an independent country in 1922. Claiming Brazil explores how Brazilians from different walks of life commemorated the event, and how this led to conflicting ideas of national identity. Civic rituals hold enormous significance, and Brazilian citizens, immigrants, and visitors employed them to articulate and perform their sense of what Brazil was, stood for, and could be. Gregg Bocketti argues that these celebrations, rather than uniting the country, highlighted tensions between modernity and tradition, over race and ethnicity, and between nation and region. Further, the rituals contributed to the collapse of the country’s social and political status quo and gave substance to the debates and ideas that characterized Brazilian life in the 1920s and then under the transformative rule of Getúlio Vargas (1930–1945). Now, at the bicentennial of Brazil’s independence, which itself unfolds in a period of political crisis and economic dislocation, and in the aftermath of several large civic events, it is an opportune moment to consider how Brazilians used civic rituals to engage with questions of identity, belonging, and citizenship one hundred years ago.

Science fiction, because of its links to science and technology, is the consummate literary vehicle for examining the perception and cultural impact of the modernization process in Brazil. Because of the centrality of the role played by the military dictatorship (1964-85) in imposing industrialization and economic development policies on Brazil, this book examines the genre in the periods before, during, and after the dictatorship, encompassing the years 1960-2000.
