O Thesaurus Essencial (dicionário analógico) é uma ferramenta de enorme valia sobretudo para os que estão sempre produzindo textos escritos ou orientando o ensino da construção deles. Visa o Thesaurus, diferentemente do dicionário lexical, a agrupar palavras e expressões associadas por uma ideia fundamental comum. Daí ser hábito de chamá-las de palavras analógicas. Na verdade, na construção de um texto, é valiosa a consulta a este tipo de dicionário, quando se intenta, por exemplo, evitar repetição de palavras e quando se procura a palavra mais adequada, mais precisa, para cada frase. Exemplo: O verbo “colocar” tornou-se um verbo altamente genérico e, por isso mesmo, empobrecedor da expressão verbal. Para se encontrar um substituto mais adequado e de uso mais preciso, deve-se consultar o índice no final do livro, onde encontrará o verbo “colocar” relacionado a cinco áreas de ideias afins, representadas cada uma por um substantivo análogo (arranjo, comissão, localização, reunião, venda). Estes cinco substantivos é que devem ser consultados, então se processará a seleção daquele mais adequado a cada construção sintático-semântica do verbo “colocar” com o nome que funciona como seu complemento. “Colocar o dinheiro no banco”, “Colocar a mão no balde com água quente”, ”Colocar a chave na fechadura”, “Colocar as mercadorias na vitrine”, “Colocar os móveis na sala”, “Colocar a escada no muro”, “Colocar uma faixa no quadril”... E os empregos de “colocar”, como verbo genérico, poderiam ir se multiplicando, na combinação com os mais diferentes nomes. Não se trata, fique claro, de “erro” ao se utilizar, genericamente, de um verbo como “colocar”. Apenas, a expressão linguística peca em precisão, em adequação, em suma, se torna reveladora de uma pessoa que tem seus recursos idiomáticos, no caso lexicais, bem limitados, particularmente na produção de textos escritos. Com “Depositar o dinheiro no banco”, “Imergir a mão no balde com água quente”, “Introduzir a chave na fechadura”, “Expor as mercadorias na vitrine”, “Dispor os móveis na sala”, “Encostar a escada no muro”, “Passar uma faixa no quadril”, já contamos, sem dúvida, com combinações lexicais mais precisas, que atestam um domínio da língua muito mais eficaz, a comprovar um bom grau de escolaridade.

One of the main cultural consequences of the contacts between Islam and the West has been the borrowing of hundreds of words, mostly of Arabic but also of other important languages of the Islamic world, such as Persian, Turkish, Berber, etc. by Western languages. Such loanwords are particularly abundant and relevant in the case of the Iberian Peninsula because of the presence of Islamic states in it for many centuries; their study is very revealing when it comes to assess the impact of those states in the emergence and shaping of Western civilization. Some famous Arabic scholars, above all R. Dozy, have tackled this task in the past, followed by other attempts at increasing and improving his pioneering work; however, the progresses achieved during the last quarter of the 20th c., in such fields as Andalusi and Andalusi Romance dialectology and lexicology made it necessary to update all the available information on this topic and to offer it in English.
