Secondo Saussure, il primo grande gruppo di compiti della linguistica è descrivere strutture, evoluzioni, parentele, tipi del maggior numero possibile di lingue, offrendone analisi sincroniche, diacroniche, funzionali, ma anche correlandole ai fenomeni sociali e culturali propri delle società entro cui e per cui le lingue vivono. Il secondo compito è individuare forze e leggi generali che agiscono in ogni punto della realtà linguistica. Il terzo compito è "definire e delimitare se stessa". L'attuazione del primo compito spetta all'insieme delle discipline che descrivono una lingua, la sua evoluzione, la sua storia. Il secondo è quello della linguistica generale. Il terzo è quello che tocca alla linguistica teorica. Se la linguistica generale è lo studio delle costanti reperibili nelle diverse realtà linguistiche studiate dalla linguistica storica e descrittiva e avvia al miglior possesso delle tecniche di analisi delle sue costanti, la linguistica teorica verifica il grado di congruenza sia interna sia con i possibili modelli di funzionamento del linguaggio che si sono elaborati. Su questa strada essa incontra e mette a frutto le grandi concezioni del linguaggio e dell'attività verbale che sono state elaborate nella storia del pensiero umano. In questo manuale Tullio De Mauro ricompone in una visione critica d'insieme i presupposti teorici e filosofici e le conseguenze che il lavoro della linguistica comporta.
