In addressing the asylum controversy in Europe today, much of the literature assumes that asylum policies result from the struggle between national interest arguing to tighten asylum and humanitarianism arguing to loosen it. This book challenges this simple tug-of-war image by examining asylum in Germany, Switzerland, and Britain from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s. The findings reveal the complex and often counter-intuitive roles national interest, international norms, and morality play in shaping asylum. It forces us to reconsider how we think about asylum and to explore alternatives to conventional assumptions.

This is the first book of its kind to address the crucial issue of why people choose to make Convention refugee claims. It represents a substantial and original contribution primarily to the field of refugee studies but also applicable for a broader readership of political science, international studies, sociology, law, history and women’s studies. Furthermore, it theorizes the problems that face refugees by discussing the perception of the possible host countries. The conclusions of the book bear directly upon contemporary issues in refugee studies that suggest refugees move on the basis of (generally) extreme levels of persecution.

To better understand international migration, I read the transcripts of the asylum debates in the Swiss, German and British parliaments and analyzed how arguments based on national interests, international norms and morality shaped recent asylum legislation. With a historically-based qualitative methodology, this work challenges much of the literature by revealing the subjective nature of national interests, the varying power of international norms and the dispute over moral obligations. It is the counter-intuitive aspects of asylum that point out the need for further research on international migration, identity and cultural norms.

Troubled Transit considers the situation of asylum seekers stuck in limbo in Indonesia from a number of perspectives. It presents not only the narratives of many transit migrants but also the perceptions of Indonesian authorities and of representatives of international and non-government organizations responsible for the care of transiting asylum seekers. Fascinated by the extraordinary and seemingly limitless resilience shown by asylum seekers during their often lengthy and dangerous journeys, the author highlights one particular fragment of their journeys — their time in Indonesia, which many expect to be the last stepping stone to a new life. While they long for their new life to unfold, most asylum seekers become embroiled in the complexities of living in transit. Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, is more than a location where people spend time waiting; it is a nation state that interacts with transiting asylum seekers and formulates policies that have a profound impact on their experience in transit there. Troubled Transit tries to explain the complexities faced by the transiting migrants within the context of the Indonesian government and its political challenges, including its relationship with Australia. The Australia-centric view of recent asylum seeker issues has tended to ignore the larger socio-political context of the migratory routes and the perspectives of transit states towards asylum seekers stuck in transit. This book hopes to direct the Australia-centric gaze northwards to take Indonesian policies and policymaking into account, thereby giving Indonesia more relevance as a transit country and as an important partner in regional protection schemes and migration management. Even though some Indonesian policies and practices are less than favourable for asylum seekers, and even reprehensible from a human rights perspective, more attention must be paid to ongoing developments that impact on transiting asylum seekers in Indonesia if any of the hardships they suffer there are to be alleviated.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Journalismus, Publizistik, Note: 1,0, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The essay is showing the current public opinion on migration in Germany. This evaluation lead to five theses made on the topic stressing the role of the news media. Nearly every day the media covers the current refugee crisis in Europe. While voluntaries are working in initial reception centres, politicians try to figure out solutions. In Berlin the lower and upper house of parliament passed a new asylum law in order to speed up the application process on October 23rd 2015. The governmental coalition formed by the two Christian Democratic Unions and the Social Democrat Party decided recently on a summit meeting to implement centres for faster processing of asylum seekers with only a slight pro-spect of success; introducing harsher residence requirements with sanctioning and ex-pressed their will to increase border protection. Since the economic crisis which turned into a national debt crisis, new right wing parties and far right movements were founded, opposing against the Euro, overregulation from Brussels and newly the refugees coming to Germany. The Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the Occident (PEGIDA) e.g., are gathering more and more sympathizers and form the inlet for parties like the National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) or the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
