For and Against fournit matière à nourrir l'argumentation. For and Against regroupe 87 sujets de débat.

Decision By Debate written by Douglas Ehninger and has been published by IDEA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Debates and debating categories.

Decision by Debate broke new ground in argumentation and debate with its publication in 1963. Ehninger and Brockriede were the first to recognize debate as fundamentally a co-operative enterprise, with the competitive clash of ideas occurring within a framework in which everyone has the opportunity to speak, in which everyone agrees to suspend judgment until all arguments are presented, in which everyone agrees to abide by the decision of the adjudicator. The most lasting legacy of the work is its break with formal, deductive logic and its introduction of Stephen Toulmin's model of argument to undergraduate student debaters, which, since then, has become a mainstay of what many have called the Renaissance of argumentation studies. Without the work presented in Decision by Debate, contemporary interdisciplinary views of argumentation that now dominate many disciplines might have never have taken place or at least have been severely delayed.

Arguer S Position written by Douglas N. Walton and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985-02-19 with Political Science categories.

Douglas N. Walton considers the question of whether the conventions of informal conversation can be articulated more precisely than they are at present. Specifically, he addresses the problem of the fallacy of ad hominem argumentation as it occurs in natural settings. Can rules be formulated to determine if criticisms of apparent hypocrisy in an argument are defensible or refutable? Walton suggests that they can, and ultimately defends the thesis that ad hominem reasoning is not fallacious per se. He carries his analysis to the core of action--theoretic reasoning--by examining a number of specimen arguments. As suggested by the title, the conclusion of ad hominem argument is demonstrated to be relative to the arguer's position. In the appendixes of the book, articles by Gerald McAuliffe and Gordon R. Lowe illustrate vivid and powerful cases in which Walton's contentions are put to the test.

This informative book is a necessary companion for anyone seeking to uncover the secret of successful persuasion: to organize, construct, and communicate arguments. It is at once comprehensive and accessible, an authoritative guide to logical thinking and effective communication. First, the text defines the nature and uses of argument, explaining how to read argument carefully. Such analysis then requires the student of persuasion to reconstruct arguments. Finally, the reader is taught how to create a critical, reasoned response, thus constructing his or her own argument. Throughout, carefully selected reading questions and exercises pace the reader and ensure that the material is securely grasped and successfully applied. This is a reprint of the 1988 Prentice Hall edition.^R

This practical, student-friendly text gives students real-world experience in developing successful arguments. The authors emphasize that argument doesn’t need to be confrontational to be effective but can be focused on achieving positions through reasoned discourse. Crawford and Carlson help students see argument as both contextual and situational while guiding them to understand current scholarly thinking on argumentation. Argument in Practice shows students how to learn, practice, reflect, and implement the intricate skills involved in developing effective arguments. It is set apart by its timely coverage of arguing in today’s online environments, especially on social networks, with a full chapter dedicated to mediated argument and integrated coverage throughout."--Provided by publisher.
