MOUCHETTE De Gentenaar Arne Sierens (°1959) is een theatermaker die 'prikkelend eersteklas theater maakt' en ook 'één van onze uniekste theaterauteurs'. Men bekijkt hem 'als een producer van hedendaags melodrama, van de groteske ook, die heerlijke mix van hoog en laag, van kitsch en kunst'. Iemand schrijft over zijn recente stukken: 'Hij 'verft' grover, bonter, grappiger en misschien wel tragischer dan ooit'. Voor Mouchette (1990) liet Sierens zich inspireren door de gelijknamige meesterlijke film van Robert Bresson en zette helemaal in op de overlevings- en bevrijdingsstrategieën van twee volkse personages. Mouchette is poppenmoedertje, onvolwassen huisvrouw, ongehuwde moeder, minnares, flamboyante flamenco-danseres, spijbelend schoolkind en brutale puber. Arsène is halve gare, misdadiger, mislukte echtgenoot, verleider, voyeur, 'moordenaar', minnaar, vervangingsvader, vreemdeling en kind. "De opeenvolging van momentopnamen, deze mengeling van gevoelens en gevoeligheden, verleent aan het stuk een zeldzame directheid en kernachtigheid." Taalunie Toneelschrijfprijs. Bekroond met de Nederlands-Vlaamse Toneelschrijfprijs 1990, Sabamprijs 1990, derde laureaat Europese Toneelschrijfprijs 1991.
