A description of a Grecian and Turkey land tour is presented in this book, encompassing cities and places circumvented by the Aegean Sea. The cities, towns and places were all reached by a combination of tour bus and cruise ship. The adventure begins in Athens, Greece, and crosses Central Greece reaching Delphi. From there it continues down into southwestern Greece into the town of Nafpaktos, on the Corinthian Strait. Ferrying across the strait into Peloponnese, the city of Nafplio is visited along with the Mycenae and Epidaurus ruins. From here the adventure retracts back to Athens by crossing over the Corinthian Canal. Here, mode of travel is switched from bus to cruise ship, Ocean Misty. The Grecian visit is continued when Santorini, Delos, and Mykonos Islands were all visited. Next the island of Rhodes, bordering the bottom of the Aegean Sea was reached. After this, Ephesus, Turkey, was approached by ship, visited, and from there the Ocean Misty was en route to the Dardanelles, the strait leading into the Sea of Marmara, thereby soon reaching Istanbul, Turkey, which was the adventure's highlight, including a visit to the Blue Mosque and a cruise up the Bosphorus to the Black Sea. The area is well explored in the writings of this book, a pleasure to read about these countries around the Aegean Sea.

A collection of eleven essays provides an assessment of the influence the Aegean world has exerted upon Greek art and civilization throughout the ages. The eleven authors, all leading experts in their fields of history, literature and art, highlight important aspects of the Aegean world in texts that combine up-to-date scholarship with a lively re-evaluation of philosophy, architecture, sculpture painting, etc. The book's most engaging quality, however, is the manner in which it attempts to convey a vivid image of the Aegean Sea and the civilization that flourished on its islands. Illustrated throughout with unique, often full page aerial photographs and drawings, the volume brilliantly captures the essence of Greek civilization and constitutes a lively introduction to the history of the Aegean world. It also provides a comprehensive study and evaluation of its many aspects and succeeds in establishing it as a point of reference for Western culture.

The Aegean dispute between Greece and Turkey is a persistent problem between the two allied states. Difference of interpretation of the treaties has contributed in the prevalence of the argument. This dispute consists of five key issues. Greece only accepts one, namely the delimitation of the continental shelf. However, Turkey has introduced and has persisted on the other four, which are the delimitation of the territorial seas, the national airspace and FIR controls over the Aegean Sea, the demilitarization of the Eastern Aegean Islands and finally the disputed islands, islets and rocks which have presented the grey zones issue. All of these matters have persisted for so long, especially after the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 where the current status quo in the Aegean was introduced, due to economic, political and strategic reasons. The Aegean dispute does not only have consequences for Greece and Turkey; it also affects, negatively, NATO and the European Union. This is an ongoing problem, which if not solved it will produce future problems, not only for the two states, but also for NATO and the EU. A third party may be needed in order to assist in finding a just and permanent solution concerning this dispute, since Greece and Turkey seem incapable of solving this dispute by themselves.

For many years, Greece and Turkey have been involved in aggressive rivalry over large areas of the Aegean Sea as well as Cyprus. Their conflicts endanger the peace between these two NATO allies and have even brought the two nations to the brink of war, but no agreement has been reached despite their mutual assistance in the aftermath of the earthquakes suffered by both countries in the summer of 1999. This work provides an in-depth discussion of how the conflicts began, the matter of Cyprus and international law, disputes and near-war situations over the Aegean, the dynamics of and prospects for a new Greek-Turkish partnership, and current developments in disputes and relations.

Greece And The Law Of The Sea written by Theodore C. Kariotis and has been published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Law categories.

Greece was one of the initial 119 delegations to sign the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea at the final meeting of the Conference for that purpose in December of 1982. When the Convention came into force in November 1994, only two countries opposed it. Turkey was one of them. Turkey has no plans to ratify the Convention in the near future. Greece & the Law of the Sea reviews the main developments in the Greek-Turkish dispute relating to the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea & analyzes all other aspects of the Greek maritime interests in the light of the Convention. The contributors have closely followed the creation of the new international law of the sea & discuss in their papers how this affects a great maritime nation, such as Greece, in a variety of ways. The work is published under the auspices of the recently established Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea & Maritime Law, an independent scientific research center affiliated with the University of the Aegean, located in Rhodes. It constitutes one of the few books to cover Greek affairs in the English language. As such, it will greatly assist non-Greek speaking scholars interested in following & studying Greek affairs.

A reissue of Eric H. Cline's highly regarded study of trade in the Late Bronze Age Aegean, first published in 1994 and out-of-print since 2000. The monograph is composed of three principal parts: 1) an analytical section discussing the trade and contacts which occurred between the Aegean, Italy, Egypt, and the Near East during the latter half of the second millennium BC, and the social, economic and cultural implications of such contacts; 2) first, a catalogue of literary and pictorial references to the LBA Aegean found in outside areas - primarily Egypt and the Near East - with transliterations and translations of the appropriate texts, and second, a compilation of the references to, and loanwords from, other areas of the Mediterranean found in the Linear B texts in the Aegean; and 3) a catalogue, by object type, of all the Orientalia and Occidentalia found in LBA contexts within the Aegean area. The monograph utilizes the catalogues in combination with previously published works by a variety of scholars to provide a detailed analysis of the trade and contacts between the LBA Aegean, Italy, Egypt and the Near East. The work is divided into six sections, each consisting of a series of interlinked essays. Section One provides an introduction to the topic, a brief overview of the previous scholarship in this area, and a discussion of the chronological problems involved. Section Two consists of an initial chapter discussing LBA trade and contact between the Aegean, Italy, Egypt and the Near East by centuries, followed by chapters discussing trade between the LBA Aegean and individual Mediterranean countries. Section Three contains discussions of the trade mechanisms involved, the trade routes, merchant nationalities, goods, motivations, and partnerships, plus a brief look at the Ulu Burun (Kas) and Cape Gelidonya shipwrecks. Section Four presents an overview of the conclusions reached by this study and reiterates that the current work presents much raw data and some preliminary observations but is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of tapping the wealth of information which may be extracted from the accompanying catalogues.
