TODOS & PARTES e suas relações na composição arquitetônica. A partir da ideia de que um projeto arquitetônico é um todo composto por partes, o texto visa decifrar as possíveis relações entre o todo e as partes. Qual a hierarquia entre eles? Qual existe primeiro? O todo determina as partes ou as partes definem o todo? A discussão está baseada na noção de composição, cujo sentido o texto atualiza. Ao longo do texto, são definidos a parte arquitetônica, o todo e a noção de totalidade em arquitetura, sem deixar de lado o conceito de fragmento, com frequência confundido com a parte. Um capítulo inteiro é dedicado à questão de como as partes são geradas, sendo apresentados quatro métodos distintos, mas que, na maioria das vezes, se unem em um projeto. São eles os métodos inovativo, tipológico, mimético e normativo. Outro capítulo trata de um tema essencial para a prática do projeto arquitetônico: os diferentes modos como as partes são organizadas e geram um todo. São apresentadas e discutidas quatro tipos de relações que podem existir entre as partes: funcionais, morfológicas, tipológicas e geométricas. Os modos de composição aditiva e subtrativa são apresentados como os dois modos básicos de organizar as partes de um todo arquitetônico, no interior dos quais se abrigam uma ou mais das relações anteriormente discutidas. O livro é concluído com um alerta sobre a noção equivocada de criatividade em arquitetura, que defende a criação de objetos arquitetônicos a partir do zero ou de situações e elementos não-arquitetônicos. O livro é concluído por uma defesa do projeto arquitetônico como transformação e adaptação de conhecimento existente, e sua pertinência para o ensino de arquitetura.
