Even though arranged and love marriages have been around for a long time, to the best of our knowledge, there are no comparative analyses in the economics literature of the relative merits of one or the other kind of marriage. Consequently, the purpose of this note is to conduct a theoretical inquiry into the desirability of arranged versus love marriages. We analyze a simple model of decision making in a dynamic and stochastic setting and show that the decision to have an arranged or a love marriage depends on a comparison of the expected amount of time it takes the agent's well-wishers to find a spouse with the expected total time it takes this agent to find a spouse by himself or herself.

In twenty-first-century India, tradition is colliding with Western culture, a clash that touches the lives of everyday Indians from the wealthiest to the poorest. While ethnicity, class, and religion are influencing the nation's development, so too are pop culture and technology-an uneasy fusion whose impact is most evident in the institution of marriage. Love and Marriage in Mumbai introduces three couples whose relationships illuminate these sweeping cultural shifts in dramatic ways: Veer and Maya, a forward-thinking professional couple whose union is tested by Maya's desire for independence; Shahzad and Sabeena, whose desperation for a child becomes entwined with the changing face of Islam; and Ashok and Parvati, whose arranged marriage, made possible by an online matchmaker, blossoms into true love. Elizabeth Flock spent close to a decade getting to know these couples-listening to their stories and living in their homes, where she was privy to marital joy, inevitable frustration, dramatic upheaval, and whispered confessions and secrets. The result is a phenomenal feat of reportage that is both an enthralling portrait of a nation in the midst of transition and an unforgettable look at the universal mysteries of love and marriage that connect us all.

Marriage is the final frontier of "being established" in life, or is it? "Are you married?", "Why aren't you married?", and "When are you getting married" are the three most asked questions throughout the world. Getting married is considered a major event in life. If marriage is considered the most important accomplishment in a global society, then finding and choosing someone to spend the rest of your life with is the most challenging. Often, we see couples dating each other for years break up eventually for want of compatibility. Sometimes, these breakups happen due to ego clashes and sometimes the couple is indecisive and cannot say if they are best for each other or not. When unsure, Love Marriage Versus Arranged Marriage: The Role of Relationship Management could be the best guidebook that could help find a solution to this. The first in a series by Ujwal Shankar, this book delves deeper into topics that are always near and dear to the hearts of young people, such as how to better understand a potential life partner. This book has its roots five years ago, when its author, Ujwal Shankar, responded to a question about whether or not a potential spouse was a good match on the Q&A website Quora. His response was only a few paragraphs long, but he couldn't help but feel like he'd done the issue a disservice. He believed the question warranted a more in-depth analysis than he could provide in such a short space. Then, about a year ago, some events transpired. During his doctoral studies at XLRI School of Management, Jamshedpur, he enrolled in the "Managerial Counselling Course," which gave him the opportunity to understand issues confronting young minds. Further, he wrote his autobiography as a submission for another course titled "Managerial Competence and Career Development." When he submitted the paper, he realised that he had been a witness to numerous instances from which he could draw insights about human behaviour in a completely different framework. Lastly, he had a "discussion" with his niece about whether Love Marriage or Arranged Marriage was preferable. This conversation inspired him to write this book. So, whether or not you are dating someone, but if marriage is on your mind and you feel need some insights- then why not just go for Love Marriage Versus Arranged Marriage: The Role of Relationship Management?

As traditional matchmaking methods and internet chat rooms come together to build matrimonial websites, our parameters have changed, but the time-honoured practice of arranged marriage sticks. Hitched explores in depth the considerations matrimony should involve, and the issues that can crop up at different stages of an arranged marriage. A cross-section of women―those who married young, married late, married the first man their parents parked before them, or married out of caste in an arranged setup―open up about experiences ranging from the frightening to the hilarious and the awww-inspiring.

Modern Romance written by Aziz Ansari and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-16 with Humor categories.

The #1 New York Times Bestseller “An engaging look at the often head-scratching, frequently infuriating mating behaviors that shape our love lives.” —Refinery 29 A hilarious, thoughtful, and in-depth exploration of the pleasures and perils of modern romance from Aziz Ansari, the star of Master of None and one of this generation’s sharpest comedic voices At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated? Some of our problems are unique to our time. “Why did this guy just text me an emoji of a pizza?” “Should I go out with this girl even though she listed Combos as one of her favorite snack foods? Combos?!” “My girlfriend just got a message from some dude named Nathan. Who’s Nathan? Did he just send her a photo of his penis? Should I check just to be sure?” But the transformation of our romantic lives can’t be explained by technology alone. In a short period of time, the whole culture of finding love has changed dramatically. A few decades ago, people would find a decent person who lived in their neighborhood. Their families would meet and, after deciding neither party seemed like a murderer, they would get married and soon have a kid, all by the time they were twenty-four. Today, people marry later than ever and spend years of their lives on a quest to find the perfect person, a soul mate. For years, Aziz Ansari has been aiming his comic insight at modern romance, but for Modern Romance, the book, he decided he needed to take things to another level. He teamed up with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg and designed a massive research project, including hundreds of interviews and focus groups conducted everywhere from Tokyo to Buenos Aires to Wichita. They analyzed behavioral data and surveys and created their own online research forum on Reddit, which drew thousands of messages. They enlisted the world’s leading social scientists, including Andrew Cherlin, Eli Finkel, Helen Fisher, Sheena Iyengar, Barry Schwartz, Sherry Turkle, and Robb Willer. The result is unlike any social science or humor book we’ve seen before. In Modern Romance, Ansari combines his irreverent humor with cutting-edge social science to give us an unforgettable tour of our new romantic world.

Matchmaking In Middle Class India written by Parul Bhandari and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-01 with Social Science categories.

This book is an extensive and thorough exploration of the ways in which the middle class in India select their spouse. Using the prism of matchmaking, this book critically unpacks the concept of the 'modern' and traces the importance of moralities and values in the making of middle class identities, by bringing to the fore intersections and dynamics of caste, class, gender, and neoliberalism. The author discusses a range of issues: romantic relationships among youth, use of online technology and of professional services like matrimonial agencies and detective agencies, encounters of love and heartbreak, impact of experiences of pain and humiliation on spouse-selection, and the involvement of family in matchmaking. Based on this comprehensive account, she elucidates how the categories of 'love' and 'arranged' marriages fall short of explaining, in its entirety and essence, the contemporary process of spouse-selection in urban India. Though the ethnographic research has been conducted in India, this book is of relevance to social scientists studying matchmaking practices, youth cultures, modernity and the middle class in other societies, particularly in parts of Asia. While being based on thorough scholarship, the book is written in accessible language to appeal to a larger audience.

An eye-opening, funny, painful, and always truthful in-depth examination of modern relationships and a wake-up call for single women about getting real about Mr. Right. You have a fulfilling job, great friends, and the perfect apartment. So what if you haven’t found “The One” just yet. He’ll come along someday, right? But what if he doesn’t? Or what if Mr. Right had been, well, Mr. Right in Front of You—but you passed him by? Nearing forty and still single, journalist Lori Gottlieb started to wonder: What makes for lasting romantic fulfillment, and are we looking for those qualities when we’re dating? Are we too picky about trivial things that don’t matter, and not picky enough about the often overlooked things that do? In Marry Him, Gottlieb explores an all-too-common dilemma—how to reconcile the desire for a happy marriage with a list of must-haves and deal-breakers so long and complicated that many great guys get misguidedly eliminated. On a quest to find the answer, Gottlieb sets out on her own journey in search of love, discovering wisdom and surprising insights from sociologists and neurobiologists, marital researchers and behavioral economists—as well as single and married men and women of all generations.
