The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive collections of works of art from antiquities to modern and contemporary material. Their preservation is a responsibility shared by the many individuals employed at the Museum who oversee and have direct contact with the collection on a daily basis. The Care and Handing of Art Objects—first published in the 1940s and continually updated—offers a guide to the best practices in handling and preserving works of art while on display, in storage and in transit. It explains many of the fundamental principles of conservation that underlie these methods. One of its goals is to make the complexities of caring for a collection readily accessible. The first part offers basic guidelines for the preservation of the diverse types of materials and art objects found in the Met. Each chapter addresses the physical characteristics specific to the particular category, and the environmental, handling and housing factors to which one should be alert to prevent damage and ensure their preservation. Written by experts in the respective specialty, it addresses the Museum’s vast holdings summarizing the most critical preservation issues, many of which are amplified by photographs. As the table of contents makes evident these range from paintings on canvas and works on paper and photographs to furniture and objects made of stone, wood and metals to arms and armor, upholstery, ethnographic materials and many others. Part II succinctly describes factors that affect the collection as a whole: among them, current environmental standards for temperature, relative humidity, light exposure, storage and art in transit. Based on Museum protocols it addresses emergency preparedness and response, and integrated pest management. For easy reference, it includes charts on storage and display conditions, on factors contributing to deterioration, and a glossary of conservation terms, principles, and housing materials referenced in the individual chapters. Drawing upon the knowledge of conservators, scientists, and curators from many different departments, as well as technicians and engineers whose expertise crosses boundaries of culture, chronology, medium and condition, The Care and Handing of Art Objects is primarily directed to staff at the Met. It is, no less, an invaluable resource for students, collectors, small museums, museum study programs, art dealers, and members of the public who want to enhance their understanding of how works of art are safeguarded and the role environment, handling and materials play in making this possible.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York houses one of the world's largest and most comprehensive collections of antiquities and works of art. Their preservation is a responsibility that involves everyone who serves the Museum and who has access to the collection. This handbook offers a practical guide to the ways in which different art objects should be handled and cared for, whether they are on display, in transit, or in storage; and it also explains some of the fundamental principles of conservation that underlie Museum practice. The first part of the book sets out guidelines for dealing with the entire spectrum of works in the Metropolitan Museum: paintings, drawings and prints, textiles, costumes, musical instruments, and three-dimensional objects, whether monumental sculpture or filigree jewelry. In the second part the emphasis is on matters and procedures that affect the collection in general, such as climate controls, light levels, and photography. Included at the end are a selected glossary of conservation terms, a short reading list, and space for the reader's own notes. Drawing on the professional experience of curators and conservators from many different departments, The Care and Handling of Art Objects has been put together primarily for those who work in the Metropolitan Museum. What it has to say, however, will be of great interest to others - private collectors large and small, museum visitors, and concerned members of the public [Publisher description]

Men Viewing Women As Art Objects written by Christoph E. Schweitzer and has been published by Camden House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Literary Criticism categories.
Varied images of women studied in a variety of German texts as a springboard for plot or character. A man looks at the portrait of a woman and then sets out to 'liberate'her and make her his own (Die Zauberflöte, Maria Stuart); an oldman, while looking at the picture of his youthful beloved, reminiscesabout his failedcourtship (Storm's Immensee). These are just twoof many uses of art works depicting women discussed in this book. Theart work can displace the living woman as in Hauff's 'Die Bettlerinvom Pont des Arts', in Jensen's 'Gradiva', and in Schimmang's'Intimität'. A man looking at a painting of himself (E. T. A.Hoffmann's Die Fermate) or a man looking at a sculpture comes toappreciate the beauty of the female figure, both in art and life(Stifter's Der Nachsommer). The innovative approach, which in part goes back to theories developed by Lessing in his Laokoon, yields, via a close reading of a variety of the texts, new insights into their structure and meaning.

Chinese Art Objects Collecting And Interior Design In Twentieth Century Britain written by Helen Glaister and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-26 with Art categories.
This book explores the relationship between collecting Chinese ceramics, interior design and display in Britain through the eyes of collectors, designers and tastemakers during the years leading to, during and following the Second World War. The Ionides Collection of European style Chinese export porcelain forms the nucleus of this study – defined by its design hybridity – offering insights into the agency of Chinese porcelain in diverse contexts, from seventeenth-century Batavia to twentieth-century Britain, raising questions about notions of Chineseness, Britishness, and identity politics across time and space. Through the biographies of the collectors, this book highlights the role of collecting Chinese art objects, particularly porcelain, in the construction of individual and group identities. Social networks linking the Ionides to agents and dealers, auctioneers, and museum specialists bring into focus the dynamics of collecting during this period, the taste of the Ionides and their self-fashioning as collectors. The book will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of art history, history of collections, interior design, Chinese studies, and material culture studies.

How Art Works written by Chloe Watfern and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-11 with Art categories.
From intergalactic travel to the daily commute, enter this book and be transported to wonderful worlds where art and life intertwine and your ideas of both are upended. Chloe Watfern, a writer, transdisciplinary researcher, and maker, joined two world-leading supported studios to learn about the work of their vibrant collectives of neurodiverse artists. At Studio A, Thom Roberts paints, photocopies, animates, and performs, inviting us to understand people as trains and trains as people (among other things). Skye-Fox, a.k.a. Katerina the Steampunk Ringmaster, a.k.a. Skye Saxon, creates interconnected universes through soft sculpture, drawing, and storytelling. Lisa Tindall writes her life breathlessly in piles of notebooks, words from which she stitches into a dress that conveys some of her experiences. At Project Art Works, Kate Adams and her son Paul Colley walk familiar and strange places, capturing them on film. A forest of scribbles emerges in an art museum as people meet through graphite and charcoal on paper. Artists and makers like Tim Corrigan, Sharif Persaud, Carl Sexton, and Sam Smith move in and out of the frame, sharing biscuits, paint brushes, and wildernesses. In this book, written as a personal narrative informed by the latest thinking on neurodiversity and art, Chloe tells a tender and exhilarating story of the social and aesthetic dynamics at Studio A and Project Art Works, places like no other. In journeying alongside the complex and astonishing contemporary artists who work there, the book invites readers to radically reconsider their settled ideas of creativity, disability, and care, while learning about lives devoted to making.
