Reclaiming public life from the ideologies of both communist regimes and neoliberalism, their projects have harnessed the politically subversive potential of social relations based on trust, reciprocity and solidarity. Drawing on archival material and exclusive interviews, in this book Izabel Galliera traces the development of socially engaged art from the early 1990s to the present in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. She demonstrates that, in the early 1990s, projects were primarily created for exhibitions organized and funded by the Soros Centers for Contemporary Art. In the early 2000s, prior to Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania entering into the European Union, EU institutions likewise funded socially-conscious public art in the region. Today, socially engaged art is characterised by the proliferation of independent and often self-funded artists' initiatives in cities such as Sofia, Bucharest and Budapest.Focusing on the relationships between art, social capital and civil society, Galliera employs sociological and political theories to reveal that, while social capital is generally considered a mechanism of exclusion in the West, in post-socialist contexts it has been leveraged by artists and curators as a vital means of communication and action.

This project sets up to explore the role exhibitions play in writing art histories of East-Central and South-East Europe after 1989. In the past twenty years we have been witnessing the increased role of exhibition as an important art historical instrument. Not only exhibitions are very much part of the art historical discourse but the role of a curator and the curating itself provide very specific models of art historical knowledge. Curated art exhibitions present a new kind of research and in many cases put under question traditional methods of art history. In spatial organization they can confirm dominant narratives or suggest a completely new readings. «East European» art history after 1989 has much to do with exhibition making and the academic art history comes to terms with the role of the exhibition in shaping its course. When talking about «re-writing» or revision of art history in the past twenty years one cannot avoid several landmark exhibitions not only as a contribution but shaping processes. The exhibition as a medium, a site of experiment or a platform of a paradigm shift is going to be examined and critically reflected. Not only exhibition formats, structures, models, concepts, genres or topics but different curatorial approaches and curatorial experiences will be the valuable part of this project.

When the Iron Curtain fell in 1989, Eastern Europe saw a new era begin, and the widespread changes that followed extended into the world of art. Art and Democracy in Post-Communist Europe examines the art created in light of the profound political, social, economic, and cultural transformations that occurred in the former Eastern Bloc after the Cold War ended. Assessing the function of art in post-communist Europe, Piotr Piotrowski describes the changing nature of art as it went from being molded by the cultural imperatives of the communist state and a tool of political propaganda to autonomous work protesting against the ruling powers. Art historians have tended to frame late-socialist Central European art as either 'totalitarian' or 'transitional'. This bold new book challenges this established viewpoint, contending that the artists of this era cannot be simply caricatured as dissident heroes, or easily subsumed into the formalist Western canon. Klara Kemp-Welch offers a compelling account of the ways in which artists in Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary embraced alternative forms of action-based practice just as their dissident counterparts were formulating alternative models of politics - in particular, an 'antipolitics' of self-organisation by society. Drawing on Vaclav Havel's claim that 'even a word is capable of a certain radiation, of leaving a mark on the 'hidden consciousness of a community", the author argues that all independent artistic initiatives in themselves served as a vehicle for opposition, playing a part in the rebirth of civil society in the region. In doing so, she makes a case for the moral and political coherence of Central European art, theory and oppositional activism in the late-socialist period and for the region's centrality to late-20th century intellectual and cultural history.Spanning a period punctuated by landmark events - the crushing of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956; the Warsaw Pact troops invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968; the signing of Charter '77 by dissident intellectuals in 1977; the birth of the Polis h Solidarity movement in 1980 - while presenting powerful new readings of the work of six key artists - Tadeusz Kantor; Julius Koller; Tamas Szentjoby; Endre Tot; Jiri Kovanda and Jerzy Beres - Antipolitics in Central European Art anchors art historical analysis within a robust historical framework.
