The Musée d'art de Joliette is one of the few North-American museums outside the major cities to have pursued acquisition and temporary exhibition policies aimed at conserving and disseminating both historical and contemporary art. Rather than a straightforward guide to the collections, this lavishly illustrated volume sheds light on the history of the museum itself, as well as that of its holdings. To this end four authors offer original essays on episodes that have shaped the collection's development. Complimenting these essays are 120 selected works presented in order of their acquisition. This unusual way of arranging the catalogue entries contrasts with the chronological and typological ordering generally imposed by art historical convention. During World War II, the Nazis plundered from occupied countries millions of items of incalculable value estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Spearheaded by Hermann Goring the looting program quickly created the largest private art collection in the world, exceeding the collections amassed by the Metropolitan in New York, the British Museum in London, the Louvre in Paris and the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow. By the end of the war, the Nazis had stolen roughly one-fifth of the entire art treasures of the world. This book explores the formation of the Nazi art collection and the methods used by Goring and his party to strip occupied Europe of a large part of its artistic heritage.

Michael Werner launched his first gallery in 1963, opening with the first exhibition of Georg Baselitz. Galleries were later established in Cologne (1969) and New York (1990).
