Art for Art's Sake and Literary Life is a dynamic history of literary aestheticism from the eighteenth century to academic deconstruction in our own time. Gene H. Bell-Villada examines an enormous range of writings by critics, philosophers, and writers from Europe, Latin America, and the United States. Uniting all is his conviction that "there are concrete social, economic, political, and cultural reasons for the emergence, growth, diffusion, and triumph of l'art pour l'art over the past two centuries." Bell-Villada begins by considering how such thinkers as Shaftesbury, Kant, and Schiller described beauty as a phenomenon to be weighed not in isolation from other aspects of our existence but as part of our general development as human beings. He recounts how the original vision of Kant and Schiller was simplified and debased within new cultural, political, and economic contexts, leading to the "aesthetic separatism" promoted by lyric poets in France. Bell-Villada then examines how the ideology of Art for Art's Sake took on new forms in Europe and the Americas, culminating in present-day versions associated with the academicization (and ever greater marginalization) of literature. Oscar Wilde's famous quip 'All art is quite useless' might not be as outrageous or demonstrably false as is often supposed. No-one denies that much art begins life with practical aims in mind: religious, moral, political, propagandistic, or the aggrandising of its subjects. But those works that survive the test of time will move into contexts where for new audiences any initial instrumental values recede and the works come to be valued for their own sake. The book explores this idea and its ramifications. The glorious Palaeolithic paintings on the walls of the Chauvet Cave present a stark example. In spite of total ignorance of their original purposes, we irresistibly describe the paintings as works of art and value them as such. Here we are at the very limits of what is meant by art and aesthetic appreciation. Are we misusing these terms in such an application? The question goes to the heart of the scope and ambition of aesthetics. Must aesthetics in its pursuit of art and beauty inevitably be culture-bound? Or can it transcend cultural differences and speak meaningfully of universal values: timelessly human not merely historically relative? The case of literature or film puts further pressure on the idea of art valued for its own sake. Characters in works of literature and film or finely-honed emotions in poetry often give pleasure precisely because they resonate with our own lives and seem (in the great works) to say something profound about human existence. Is not this kind of insight why we value such works? Yet the conclusion is not quite as clear-cut as it might seem and the idea of valuing something for its own sake never quite goes away.

For, while the word with what it implies is of honorable heritage, it has become discredited. It is not unusual to hear Culture sneered at, as an affectation of superiority or the crazy delusion of unpractical enthusiasts. One of the stock jokes of Europe is the American who scours over the continent at express speed, "getting culture." I myself remember meeting a Westerner in a hotel in Rome who told me he had arrived that morning and was leaving that night and in the interval had "done" the Eternal City. He explained that after finishing his business in Paris, he had found he had a few days to "speculate with" and determined to realize the dream of his life. In anticipation of the possibility, he had provided himself before leaving home with a list of the principal "features" and by paying double rates to a guide and cabman had succeeded in "taking them all in." In high satisfaction he showed me the list with each item duly ticked off. Now it is easy enough to smile at this or to deplore it as pathetic; but for my own part, I see something fine in this naive episode; yes, and finely characteristic of American enterprise and spirit. It is not such men as this that retard our Democracy, but those sleek overfed citizens who He back in their easy-chairs after the day's business and see in the smoke of their fat cigars dreams only of further money-making. What is art? The arts establishment has a simple answer: anything is art if a reputed artist or expert says it is.
