Le cerf se trouve déjà dans l'art pariétal préhistorique, probablement en liaison avec une intention magico-cynégétique et/ou religieuse. À partir de l'âge du bronze, l'animal fait l'objet, sinon d'un culte, du moins d'une vénération de nature solaire et ignée: sa ramure est assimilée aux rayons du soleil et au feu. Assumant un rôle de lien entre le Ciel et la Terre, le cerf tient une place centrale dans les légendes et mythes de nombreux peuples, surtout indo-européens et asiatiques, associé à l'Arbre de vie - à cause du renouvellement périodique de ses bois -, et symbolise la chaleur, la fertilité et l'éveil spirituel. Le combat du cerf contre les serpents, thème qu'on trouve à la fois dans les divers paganismes et dans le christianisme, représente la lutte entre la lumière et les ténèbres. Animal lié à la mort et à la renaissance, le cerf possède une importante nature initiatique et psychopompe, guidant le défunt sur les chemins de l'Autre Monde. Cette idée de guidance se retrouve dans les légendes de saint Hubert et de saint Eustache où le cerf est identifié au Christ sauveur des âmes. Symbole ambivalent, tantôt positif tantôt négatif le cerf occupe une place de choix au sein de la symbolique universelle et du phénomène héraldique européen. Painting, Politics and the Struggle for the ?ole de Paris, 1944-1964 is the first book dedicated to the postwar or 'nouvelle' ?ole de Paris.
