At the height of the Art Nouveau movement and into the early days of Art Deco, Christian Stoll Studios was a leading and prolific source of graphic design. The Leipzig-based firm, which produced beautiful stock books for all forms of design applications, was active chiefly from 1900 to the beginning of World War I and renowned for their staff of creative artists. Three of Stoll's designers are responsible for the majority of the works in this volume: Richard Kühnel, Hugo Sachs, and Josef Pilters. Their illustrations appear here in more than 90 breathtaking plates that range from single- to full-color. Collected from rare originals of the studio's stock portfolios, these designs have been unavailable for over a century. The highly stylized images — consisting chiefly of flowers, grapes, wreaths, and other botanical motifs — are rendered in many different shapes and sizes. Their splendid variety and versatility form an abundant source of reference and inspiration for graphic and textile designers, artists, art students, and anyone seeking striking Art Nouveau ornaments.

"The letter types and designs of the early 20th century, when Art Nouveau was moving toward the Art Deco styles, are now being recognized by graphic artists and designers for the truly unique and powerful designs they are. The floral patterns, highly personal lyricism, and gently flowing lines of Art Nouveau were taking on the Egyptian-styled, abstractly geometrical, almost overpowering characteristics which would later be identified as Art Deco. In the interim, the styles had the benefit of both--the strongly captivating Art Deco look with the lyrical, personal qualities of Art Nouveau. Among the most striking types and decorations during this period were the "caractères en bois" (wood type) of the Swiss firm of Roman Scherer at Lucerne. For this volume designer Theodore Menten has selected a wide range of borders, decorations and letter styles from the Roman Scherer catalogue. He includes borders--nearly 100 with up to four different sizes of each and enough repetitions for easy use. The borders range from floral patterns and leaf forms to highly abstract uses of circles and other geometrical shapes. There are approximately the same number of decorations including dividing lines in many different sizes ans styles, the traditional pointing hands, star shapes, a lyre, florals, abstracts and much more. The letter styles (a total of 24 with over 1,100 capital and lower-case letters) range from scripts, block forms and three-dimensional cuts to textured letters designed for two or more colors and gently rounded letters that seem almost sculpted out of wood."--Back cover.

Art Deco - the style that swept across the globe during the 1920s and 1930s and created the defining look of the interwar years. Its influence was ubiquitous- it touched the design of everything - from cinemas and Hollywood films to the packaging of cigarettes, from evening wear and accessories to luxury liners and locomotives. Deco was the ultimate synthesis of styles- it borrowed from European craft traditions as eagerly as it appropriated aspects of 'the exotic' from the cultures of Ancient Egypt, Meso-America, the oriental East and black Africa. Its use of rare and unashamedly precious materials was a reminder of the wealth of empires, whilst its geometric imagery celebrated urban modernity and the experience of modernity worldwide. This lavish and erudite book brings together nearly 40 essays from leading experts in the field to discuss the phenomenon that was Art Deco in the most wide-ranging survey of what created such an utterly distinctive iconography - its sources, its varied forms of expression, and the way it refined and redefined itself as it spread throughout the world. With breathtaking illustrations and essays both thought-provoking and scholarly, it will stand as the definitive book on what was, arguably, the most popular style of the twentieth century.
