Many modern artists and architects continue to imagine and build the world technologically. Their beliefs remain firmly rooted in their assumption that the liberating forces of technology freed them from previous artistic traditions while making available vast means of production and a plethora of materials. All artistic traditions were seemingly put aside by the paintings of Cézanne, the poetry of Baudelaire, and the architecture of Le Corbusier. Behind this apparent freedom French critic Jacques Ellul, author of the classic The Technological Society, found an absolute slavery. The artist was the handmaiden of technology, a relation the artist no longer understood, like other citizens of technological culture. Artists acclaimed their unbridled individualism while being intensely determined by the forces of technological culture. Ellul examines this process in modern art from the beginning of the 20th century where the sense of art - its meaning and embodiments - is reduced to non-sense. Ellul's study is in the tradition of Guy Debord's The Society of Spectacle and Theodor Adorno's Aesthetic Theory but moves significantly beyond their Marxist perspectives that were, from Ellul's view, co-opted by technique.

Worldmaking as Techné: Participatory Art, Music, and Architecture outline a practice that challenges the World and how it could be through a kind of future-making, and/or other world-making, by creating alternate realities as artworks that are simultaneously ontological propositions. In simplified terms, the concept of techné is concerned with the art and craft of making. In particular a kind of practice that embodies the enactment of a theoretical approach that helps determine the significance of the work, how it was made, and why. By positioning worldmaking as a kind of techné, we seek to create a discourse of art-making as an enframing of the world that results in the expression of ontological propositions through the creation of art-worlds. The volume focuses on the involvement of the techné of worldmaking in participatory art practice. Such practice can be found in all areas of art, however, under scrutiny for this particular book are interactive, generative, and prosthetic art, architecture, and music practices that depend for their vitality and development on the participation of their observers. The book is organized into three sections: po(i)etic, machinic, and cybernetic, which explore the aesthetics, systems, methods, and ontological underpinnings of a worldmaking based practice. Each section contains historical texts alongside new texts. The texts were carefully chosen to highlight the integration of theory and practice in their approach. While the foundation of this worldmaking is deeply philosophical and rigorous in its approach, there is a need to connect this work to the World of our everyday experience. The Architectural Imagination at the Digital Turn asks what it means to speak of a "digital turn" in architecture. It examines how architects at the time engaged with the digital and imagined future modes of practice, and looks at the technological, conceptual and economic phenomena behind this engagement. It argues that the adoption of digital technology in architecture was far from linear but depended on complex factors, from the operative logic of the technology itself to the context in which it was used and the people who interacted with it. Creating a mosaic-like account, the book presents debates, projects and publications that changed how architecture was visualized, fabricated and experienced using digital technology. Spanning the university, new media art institutes, ecologies, architectural bodies, fabrication and the city, it re-evaluates familiar narratives that emphasized formal explorations; instead, the book aims to complicate the "myth" of the digital by presenting a nuanced analysis of the material and social context behind each case study.
