"This timely volume challenges the narrow Western-centrism of most art historical models. Archeologists have found that, for tens of thousands of years, all human cultures have shared a desire for visual representation or expression. Yet the study of art history has traditionally focused on Western artworks of the past few centuries. World Art Studies examines the phenomenon of art through a broader cultural, global, and temporal perspective, bringing together a uniquely exhaustive range of perspectives on art and borrowing approaches from the study of neuroscience, evolutionary biology, anthropology and geography as models - alongside more conventional art historical perspectives. In musicology or linguistics, using such diverse viewpoints for reflection and research is considered part of the normal process. In that spirit, this volume goes beyond abstract models, using case studies to demonstrate and examine specific methods of investigation."--BOOK JACKET.

What Is Art written by John C Van Dyke and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-04 with categories.

Professor Van Dyke's book is not, as its title might imply, a treatise on esthetics, but a group of half a dozen essays put forth as argument "not only for art as art. but for art as an expression of life; that and its decorative and utilitarian aim are its sole appeals; they never should have been lost sight of for a moment; in the appreciation of art the commercial phase of it is irrelevant and wholly negligible." In bulk it is only a little book that can be carried in the coat pocket, but none more suggestive and stimulating on its theme has appeared in several seasons. We in America, Mr. Van Dyke holds, have become so interested in art as a commodity, or a curiosity, that we are in danger of forgetting that art may be regarded purely as art, or even as something of use and purpose. We have taken our noti0ns of art too much from dealers, collectors and museum directors, and have thus been led into historic and commercial fallacy. We are "in danger of forgetting that name and price and pedigree have nothing whatever to do with excellence or its absence in a work of art. The canvas that will not stand without a signature, a hall mark, or a dollar mark cannot stand long by virtue of them." The devotees of only the rare and the dear he castigates as enemies of sane art appreciation. But the modern artist himself is not blameless in this matter, for by a too strict adherence to the model he has allowed his powers of visual memory and invention to become atrophied-has "caught at the form and missed the spirit." One of the best chapters in the book is that on "The Use of the Model," which is a relentless but salutary exposure of the extreme literalness that vitiates so much of contemporary art. He makes a strong plea for an intelligent patronage and appreciation of our own art, which he finds "neither despicable nor negligible, the higher criticism seems disposed both to sneer 'at it and neglect it." He champions the much maligned skyscraper, in that it fulfils its purpose and is picturesque, is our only original style in architecture, and embodies a new principle in construction. He points out that: "We shall not be great in art or its appreciation, nor shall we in any wise become an artistic people, until we put aside our foreign baubles and do our own things, with our own materials, in our own way . . . the inspiration of a nation's art never came out of the junkshop." -"The Independent," Volume 70

Developing Visual Arts Education In The United States written by Mary Ann Stankiewicz and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-15 with Education categories.

This book examines how Massachusetts Normal Art School became the alma mater par excellence for generations of art educators, designers, and artists. The founding myth of American art education is the story of Walter Smith, the school’s first principal. This historical case study argues that Smith’s students formed the professional network to disperse art education across the United States, establishing college art departments and supervising school art for industrial cities. As administrative progressives they created institutions and set norms for the growing field of art education. Nineteenth-century artists argued that anyone could learn to draw; by the 1920s, every child was an artist whose creativity waited to be awakened. Arguments for systematic art instruction under careful direction gave way to charismatic artist-teachers who sought to release artistic spirits. The task for art education had been redefined in terms of living the good life within a consumer culture of work and leisure.

Particular emphasis is placed on the 19th and 20th centuries and on the social context that has affected our concept of art today. This book will be useful as a main text in history of art education courses, as a supplemental text in courses in art education methods and history of education, and as a valuable resource for students, professors, and researchers. “The book should become a standard reference tool for art educators at all levels of the field.” —The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism “Efland has filled a gap in historical research on art education and made an important contribution to scholarship in the field.” —Studies in Art Education

Critical Studies In Art And Design Education written by Richard Hickman and has been published by Intellect (UK) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04 with Art categories.

This book reviews past practice and theory in critical studies and discusses various trends; some papers keenly advocate a re-conceptualisation of the whole subject area, while others describe aspects of current and past practice which exemplify the "symbiotic" relationship between practical studio work and critical engagement with visual form. Rod Taylor, who has done much to promote and develop critical studies in the UK, provides us with examples of classroom practice and gives us his more recent thoughts on fundamental issues "universal themes" in art and gives examples of how both primary and secondary schools might develop their teaching of art through attending to themes such as "identity," "myth," and "environments" to help "re-animate the practical curriculum." Although some of the discussion in this book centres on or arises from the English National curriculum, the issues are more global, and relevant to anyone involved in developing or delivering art curricula in schools. An American perspective is given in papers by George Geahigan and Paul Duncum. Geahigan outlines an approach to teaching about visual form which begins with students' personal responses and is developed through structured instruction. In Duncum s vision of visual culture art education sites such as theme parks and shopping malls are the focus of students' critical attention in schools; Nick Stanley gives a lucid account of just such an enterprise, giving practical examples of ways to engage students with this particular form of visual pleasure. This publication serves to highlight some of the more pressing issues of concern to art and design teachers in two aspects. Firstly it seeks to contextualise the development of critical studies, discussing its place in the general curriculum possibly as a discrete subject and secondly it examines different approaches to its teaching."

Art education has a definite impact on artists' sense of place and their spatial relations. Exploring where and why artists choose to locate is the first step in describing an art scene ethnographically. This research considers coming to and going through art school as a crucial inter-subjective learning environment. Artists learn not just to engage with place through spatial and relational practices, but gain a sense of mobility and transnational flows in a globalized art world. This book is the first time the art school has been studied this way in the nascent field of art geography, blending the tool kits of human geography and urban studies. This is timely against the backdrop of worldwide university closures of physical space and cost intensive fine art courses as a triumph of managerialism and business-case over education. This volume helps highlight how investment in this form of education has an important capacity for nurturing art scenes and feeding into the community at large.
