In addition to considering the motives of thieves, the book looks at the way art theft is socially organized: the types of thefts that are committed, the ways thieves locate art to steal and how they gain access to it, their use of insiders and fronts, and the way they launder stolen art. The relationship between art theft and organized crime, especially drug traffickers, is investigated.

This book brings together empirical and theoretical case-study research on art and heritage crime. Drawn from a diverse group of researchers and professionals, the work presented explores contemporary conceptualisations of art crime within broader contexts. In this volume, we see ‘art’ in its usual forms for art crime scholarship: in paintings and antiquities. However, we also see art in fossils and in violins, chairs and jewellery, holes in the ground and even in the institutions meant to protect any, or all, of the above. And where there is art, there is crime. Chapters in this volume, alternatively, zoom in on specific objects, on specific locations, and on specific institutions, considering how each interact with the various conceptions of crime that exist in those contexts. This volume challenges the boundaries of what we understand as “art and heritage crimes” and displays that both art, and criminality related to art, is creative and unpredictable.

Mapping out the world's infamous art thefts, forgeries, and acts of vandalism, this unique and visually striking reference illuminates the prevalence, motivations, and consequences of art crime in every corner of the globe. Art history is filled with stories of art crime--but the depth and breadth of these incidents is not generally understood. The first book of its kind, this atlas illustrates and contextualizes nearly one hundred incidents in a unique format that allows readers to visualize the geography of art crime from the past two centuries. While the most famous crimes have occurred in Europe, this book includes malfeasance and scandals that took place in dozens of countries, including Egypt, Mexico, China, Australia, and Brazil. Divided into sections on thefts, vandalism, and forgeries, the chapters are sub-divided by continent with maps of the regions. Each crime is profiled with an absorbing narrative and images of the artworks, perpetrators, and scenes of the crime. Additional sidebars feature compelling information about the artist and/or the subjects of the work of art. Including world-renowned crimes such as the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre, the 1975 attach on Rembrandt's Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and Han van Meegeren's forgery of Vermeer's The Supper at Emmaus in 1937, this book also includes lesser known incidents: the theft of the ruby slippers from the Judy Garland Museum in Minnesota; a security guard arrested for vandalizing paintings at the Yeltsin Center in Yekaterinburg, Russia; and a Chinese librarian who stole 143 paintings by famous Chinese artists and replaced them with his own fakes. Filled with intrigue, controversies, and power dynamics this is a captivating exploration of the darker side of art history that reveals its surprisingly global reach.

How does transnational crime interact with legal companies andgovernments? Are legal actors primarily victimized by transnationalcriminals or are the two connected by collaborative relationships? Andhow are these crimes often transformed into legitimate activities? This book seeks to answer these and related questions. Its main topicis the translational illicit art and antiquities trade, based on a thoroughempirical study of data gathered in France, Italy, the Netherlands andother places around the world. The reader will encounter a large numberof case studies, from auction houses selling looted antiquities to violentrobberies of museums and castles, and much more.Added to this is an analysis of the way legal and illegal actorsinteract around all kinds of transnational crimes, from terrorism to drugtrafficking, cigarette smuggling, trade in blood diamonds and covertoperations of intelligence agencies around the world. This analysis istranslated into an analytical model to understand the interfaces betweenthe legal and the illegal, and in fact the absence of a meaningfuldistinction between "upper" and "underworld." After reading this book, one will never think in the same way about transnational crime and theillicit art and antiquities trade as a most interesting part of it. Dr. Edgar Tijhuis is the academic director of the Association forResearch into Crimes against Art (ARCA) in Amelia (Italy). The role of private actors in policing has become a topic in both research and policy, as police forces face budgetary and expertise-related constraints. These challenges are evident in art crime policing, where a lack of prioritisation often means limited resources are allocated for a crime that requires significant expertise to tackle. Cooperating with private actors has been mooted as a solution to this deficit, but empirical research to support this suggestion is scarce. This book helps fill this gap by examining the interaction between specialist art crime police units and private actors in Belgium, the United Kingdom, and France. Its central questions are whether cooperation already exists in art crime policing, and why, or not. It was found that while limits to police capacity are an important driver for private outreach, several other factors also significantly affect cooperation. This book is relevant for policy, practice, and research, as it examines a hitherto less discussed topic which is nonetheless urgent as art crime shows little signs of abating.

In the world of law enforcement art and antiquity crime has in the past usually assumed a place of low interest and priority. That situation has now slowly begun to change on both the local and international level as criminals, encouraged in part by the record sums now being paid for art treasures, are now seeking to exploit the art market more systematically by means of theft, fraud and looting. In this collection academics and practitioners from Australasia, Europe and North America combine to examine the challenges presented to the criminal justice system by these developments. Best practice methods of detecting, investigating, prosecuting and preventing such crimes are explored. This book will be of interest and use to academics and practitioners alike in the areas of law, crime and justice.
