This book explores the relationship between the sciences of representation and the strategy of landscape valorisation. The topic is connected to the theme of the image of the city, which is extended to the territory scale and applied to case studies in Italy’s Umbria region, where the goal is to strike a dynamic balance between cultural heritage and nature. The studies demonstrate how landscape represents an interpretive process of finding meaning, a product of the relationships between mankind and the places in which it lives. The work proceeds from the assumption that it is possible to describe these connections between environment, territory and landscape by applying the Vitruvian triad, composed of Firmitas (solidity), Utilitas (utility) and Venustas(beauty). The environment, the sum of the conditions that influence all life, represents the place’s solidity, because it guarantees its survival. In turn, territory is connected to utility, and through its etymological meaning is linked to possession, to a domain; while landscape, as an “area perceived by people”, expresses the search for beauty in a given place, the process of critically interpreting a vision.

Se ci mostrassero una serie di immagini di prodotti industriali – automobili, elettrodomestici, computer, cellulari – e ci chiedessero di metterle in sequenza cronologica, è probabile che non sbaglieremmo, anche se ignorassimo i requisiti tecnici e prestazionali di quegli oggetti. A guidarci basterebbe la loro forma, segnale inequivocabile di maggiore o minore attualità. L’alleanza tra la forma e il tempo di cui diventa espressione è insieme ragion d’essere e principio regolatore del design. Discendente dalla nobile schiatta dell’architettura e dalla meno titolata arte manifatturiera, il design ha dato corso alla sua natura di figlio ribelle, febbrilmente votato all’innovazione, tra guizzi autoriali e consapevolezza dei vincoli tecno-economici posti alla sua peripezia intellettuale, e sempre in fuga dall’etichettatura metodologica e disciplinare. Francesco Trabucco, che lo pratica e lo insegna, ed è in materia un’autorità internazionale, proprio dal carattere sfuggente del design riesce a ricavare il suo identikit. Per tracciarlo occorre sfogliare l’intero vocabolario del nuovo fiammante. Il lavoro di design infatti attribuisce nuove qualità estetiche ad artefatti materiali o digitali già esistenti, ne inventa di nuovi, allestisce nuovi scenari d’uso per le merci, compila nuovi prontuari di senso per comportamenti inediti, si avventura a progettare addirittura l’esperienza nei nuovissimi territori virtuali. Un po’ artigiano, un po’ artista, ma soprattutto soggetto collettivo che risponde alle logiche e alle strategie di impresa, il designer oggi si riconoscerebbe a stento nel creativo puro celebrato dalla mitologia della modernità. Assomiglia molto di più all’ultimo approdo della progettazione, la «piattaforma di prodotto»: un palinsesto aperto, in continuo aggiornamento, che anticipa e integra le sollecitazioni del mercato.

Chimera. Il Corpo Espanso per una nuova ecosofia dell'arte individua un punto di incontro tra arte e design, tecnologia e scienza nell’indagine sul corpo umano in dialogo con il contesto che lo circonda.
