La ciencia y el arte son actividades inequívocamente humanas, que testimonian un deseo de ver más allá de lo visible y muestran los éxitos culminantes de las perspectivas objetiva y subjetiva del mundo. Pero aunque manan de una misma fuente –la cuidadosa observación de las cosas- elaboran teorías diferentes acerca de éste: qué significa, cuáles son sus verdaderas conexiones internas. «Este libro –escribe su autor, el eminente astrofísico John D. Barrow- es un intento de examinar con ojos de científico algunas cosas que normalmente se mantienen fuera de la visión científica: aquellas que son admiradas antes que explicadas». Para ello se plantea cuestiones como por qué preferimos algunas formas particulares de arte y de música, cuáles son los orígenes de nuestro sentido de la belleza, o si la estructura de nuestra mente puede determinar qué asuntos filosóficos nos parecen estimulantes. Para responder a éstas y a otras preguntas, el autor se aventura en un territorio fascinante, misterioso y en gran parte inexplorado donde se dan cita la física, la cosmología, la cibernética, la biología evolutiva, el arte, la historia y la filosofía. La investigación de Barrow ilustra las múltiples vías a través de las cuales la estructura del universo ha modelado nuestro pensamiento y nuestro gusto estético y termina relacionando los dominios tradicionalmente separados del arte y la ciencia, y respondiendo a preguntas del tipo de cómo nuestro entorno cósmico y planetario afecta nuestra apreciación artística del paisaje, cuál es el origen de los colores naturales o de la música, un arte que tiene, como pocos, el poder de influir en nuestras emociones. Lo menos que puede decirse de esta obra es que en ella la ciencia, el arte, la antropología y la filosofía se unen en una irresistible y subyugadora combinación.
