"The arrival of the Dorians in Greece marked the beginning of the so-called "Greek Middle Ages", an essential period for the formation of Greek civilization. The Dorians mixed with the descendents of the Mycenaeans, giving rise to a new civilization based on the city-state (polis), which already in the 8th century BCE colonized vast regions of the Black sea and the Mediterranean, including Souther Italy and Sicily. In 753 BCE the city of Rome was founded based on a monarchy, then starting in 509 BCE it became a republic. At the same time a democratic change took place in Athens, which in a short period of time conquered a leading position politically and culturally. The rivalries between the city-states, with the resulting political weakening in the region, favoured the rise of Philip II of Macedonia, who for the first time was able to subdue all of Greece. The Macedonians Empire expanded, but upon the death of Alexander the Great, it was divided among his generals, who were not able to combat the expansion of the Roman Empire at the time ..."--Introduction.
