La presente obra recrea el espacio como tema en la arquitectura y el arte contemporáneos, principalmente en el periodo que abarca desde los primeros años sesenta hasta finales de los ochenta, cuando la idea de espacio cobró un especial protagonismo. El análisis del papel del espacio en las artes se centra en la escultura y sus desbordamientos, de manera que se establece una especie de dialéctica entre el espacio arquitectónico y el escultórico, rastreando los ricos márgenes que se han generado en los límites de ambas disciplinas y que han dado origen a otros nuevos géneros en los que lo espacial aparece como una de sus características más definitorias. Sin pretender llega a hacer una historia de la cultura de una época o momento determinado, este ensayo intenta superar las metodologías al uso en historiografía del arte, así como los conceptos preestablecidos sobre las distintas artes para, sirviéndose de ideas y acontecimientos filosóficos, artístico, musicales, literarios y arquitectónicos, trazar un perfil del ambiente cultural que se respiró en Occidente tras la Segunda Guerra mundial. Para ello se sirve de un hilo conductor: la idea de espacio.

The performing arts represent a significant part of the artistic production in our culture. Correspondingly the fields of drama, film, music, opera, dance and performance studies are expanding. However, these arts remain an underexplored territory for aesthetics and the philosophy of art. Expression in the Performing Arts tries to contribute to this area. The volume collects essays written by international scholars who address a variety of themes concerning the core philosophical topic of expression in the theory of the performing arts. Specific questions about the ontology of art, the nature of the performances, the role of the performer, and the relations between spectators and works emerge from the study of the performing arts. Besides, these arts challenge the unchanging physicality of other kinds of works of art, usually the direct result of creative individual artist, and barely affected by the particular circumstances of their exhibition. Expression is one of the issues that adopt a special character in the performing arts. Do singers, dancers or actors express the feelings a work is expressive of? How does the performer contribute to the expressive content of the work? How does the spectator emotionally respond to the physical proximity of the performers? Is aesthetic distance avoided in the understanding of the performing arts? How are the expressive properties of work, performance and characters related? And how are the subjectivities they embody revealed? The contributions presented here are not all in agreement on the right answers to theses questions, but they offer a critical and exciting discussion of them. In addition to original proposals on the theoretical aspect of expression in the performing arts, the collection includes analyses of individual artists, historical productions and concrete works of art, as well as reflections on performative practice.

Can we scientifically measure the improvisation of a text? This work aims to investigate in which dimension art meets science and how it happens. Artists need to discover new conceptual instruments that contribute to the probing of the laws of matter, social existence, and the human mind. The rigorous and fascinating trip that Anna Grazia Cafaro proposes to capture the sense, function, and nature of the actor’s improvisation is a splendid and a unique example of a “new alliance” between art and science, predicted forty years ago by the scientist Ilya Prigogine and the philosopher Isabelle Stengers. Thanks to the application of Chaos Theory to the theatrical processes, attempted here for the first time, the actor and the performance are analyzed as “complex dynamic systems” like a cell, in which, paradoxically, chaos and order coexist and maintain the system in balance; the continuous passages from chaos to order, create the necessary tension and energy that allows the spectator to build his own meaning. Interactions between photography and performance during a chronological period ranging from the so-called “nuevos comportamientos artísticos” (Spanish conceptual art) at the beginnings of 70s, to the definitive institutionalization of the “tableau form” in the 80s, are analyzed in this research. This is a complex and not lineal trip, with particular interest in the Spanish context, since some important changes affecting political and cultural life took place during this period, conditioning the process object of the present work. The work tries to discuss those performance theories that emphasize the “liveness”, and doing so, pushed the photography into the background. By putting those controversies in the scope of “nuevos comporamientos”, we have created a frame of reference to explain those activities near conceptual art, and then, we have looked for their continuity in certain works carried out during the 80s with neither media visibility, nor critical mediators. With the enthusiastic attitudes of the “movida” as a background, photography becomes institutionalized whereas performance gets outside of the “official aesthetics”. The origin of a cultural identity projecting some festive stereotypes onto contemporary art, can be placed in the 80s, being those stereotypes the starting point for a relational Hispanic tradition empowered by the cultural policies in the 90s. By means of restructuring a complicated net of critical genealogies, we have tried to explore some interesting strains related to the legitimacy of the action in the institutional scene, located in the cross between photography and performance in that decade.

Tras un primer capítulo en el que plantea los problemas fundamentales del arte contemporáneo teniendo en cuenta las reflexiones de Benjamin, Adorno y Greenberg, así como los cambios habidos en la industria de la cultura y la comunicación, en la tecnología y el mercado, Di Giacomo traza las líneas fundamentales del arte contemporáneo a partir del desarrollo de la vanguardia, el cubismo, las obras de Braque y Picasso, la ruptura radical que supone el trabajo de Duchamp, el surrealismo y el dadaísmo, y la posterior evolución del arte abstracto, Malevich y Kandinsky. Los cambios políticos, culturales y sociales, morales también, habidos tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial determinaron trayectorias significativamente diferentes a las mantenidas hasta entonces. Di Giacomo estudia a Giacometti y a Bacon, pero también las creaciones del Minimalismo y del Arte Conceptual, no menos que las de una "nueva figuración" que tiene su mejor expresión en el "realismo" de Koons: paradójicamente, la realidad se aplica a imitar al arte. El arte no está, sin embargo, exento de rebeldía y testimonio: Beuys, Boltanski y Kiefer son los mejores ejemplos a este respecto.
