Este libro propone revisar la pertinencia del termino artesania para nombrar a la produccion estetica popular latinoamericana, pues es un concepto gestado en el contexto europeo-moderno, que conlleva resonancias peyorativas (la carga de la funcionalidad). Tambien propone el abandono de la identificacion entre lo estetico y lo formal. Lo estetico, en tanto conocimiento sensible, implica otros elementos que no son los exclusiva y excluyentemente formales. La percepcion tambien permite comprender las relaciones de sentido que se establecen entre los objetos, las practicas y el mundo de la cultura que los crea, como su grado de resistencia frente imposiciones foraneas. En esta investigacion tambien se consideran esteticos otros matices de los objetos y las practicas culturales: el valor tecnico y el papel que juegan las condiciones de produccion (que aqui se reunen bajo el nombre de valor "tecnisimo"), sus relaciones con la cosmovision de una cultura determinada, (que se denominan valor "sacro-usual") y la resistencia que pone la comunidad a la hora de aceptar y adoptar modelos o paradigmas foraneos, (que recibe el nombre de valor "mambi-forme")."
