In this sense, means a libertarian practice as opposed to traditional systems of control and validation of art. The book focuses on highlighting and making visible the communications network that allowed mail art from countries where political regimes-often-censored dictatorial and limiting freedom of expression and free flow of ideas. The edited volume presents a chronological review of the activities performed by Mail Art Mexican artists, not forgetting that this phenomenon ties built with actors from other latitudes. This book maps key moments in the history of postwar art from a global perspective. The reader is introduced to a new globally oriented approach to art, artists, museums and movements of the postwar era (1945–70). Specifically, this book bridges the gap between historical artistic centers, such as Paris and New York, and peripheral loci. Through case studies, previously unknown networks, circulations, divides and controversies are brought to light. From the development of Ethiopian modernism, to the showcase of Brazilian modernity, this book provides readers with a new set of coordinates and a reassessment of well-trodden art historical narratives around modernism. This book will be of interest to scholars in art historiography, art history, exhibition and curatorial studies, modern art and globalization.

Mathias Goeritz written by Jennifer Josten and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-01 with Architecture categories.

The first major work in English on Mathias Goeritz (1915-1990), this book illuminates the artist's pivotal role within the landscape of twentieth-century modernism. Goeritz became recognized as an abstract sculptor after arriving in Mexico from Germany by way of Spain in 1949. His call to integrate abstract forms into civic and religious architecture, outlined in his "Emotional Architecture" manifesto, had a transformative impact on midcentury Mexican art and design. While best known for the experimental museum El Eco and his collaborations with the architect Luis Barrag n, including the brightly colored towers of Satellite City, Goeritz also shaped the Bauhaus-inspired curriculum at Guadalajara's School of Architecture and the iconic Cultural Program of Mexico City's 1968 Olympic Games. Josten addresses the Cold War implications of these and other initiatives that pitted Goeritz, an advocate of internationalist abstraction, against Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, ardent defenders of the realist style that prevailed in official Mexican art during the postrevolutionary period. Exploring Goeritz's dialogues with leading figures among the Parisian and New York avant-gardes, such as Yves Klein and Philip Johnson, Josten shows how Goeritz's approach to modernism, which was highly attuned to politics and place, formed part of a global enterprise.

Summary: In 1975 the Mexican writer Ulises Carrión, who had begun to publish his own artists' books in about 1971, set up Other Books and So in Amsterdam, the first bookshop specializing in this type of works, which also functioned as a publishing company and an archive. Carrión's involvement in Mail Art and Postal Art came into being. Some of these pieces were exhibited for the first time at the Graphic Arts Institute of Oaxaca and at the Library of Mexico, as exhibits that served as an introduction for the Ulises Carrion retrospective at the Carrillo Art Museum.
