DIV Artemis of Ephesos was one of the most widely worshiped deities of the Graeco-Roman World. Her temple, the Artemision, was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and for more than half a millennium people flocked to Ephesos to learn the great secret of the mysteries and sacrifices that were celebrated every year on her birthday. In this work Guy MacLean Rogers sets out the evidence for the celebration of Artemis's mysteries against the background of the remarkable urban development of the city during the Roman Empire and then proposes an entirely new theory about the great secret that was revealed to initiates into Artemis's mysteries. The revelation of that secret helps to explain not only the success of Artemis's cult and polytheism itself but, more surprisingly, the demise of both and the success of Christianity. Contrary to many anthropological and scientific theories, the history of polytheism, including the celebration of Artemis's mysteries, is best understood as a Darwinian tale of adaptation, competition, and change. /div

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 2+, Universität Potsdam (Historisches Institut), Veranstaltung: Griechische Religion, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In der folgenden Arbeit werde ich mich mit der griechischen Göttin Artemis auseinandersetzen. Dazu werde ich mich zunächst mit der Einordnung dieser in die griechische Götterwelt, insbesondere ihrer Geburt, ihren Attributen und Funktionen, ihrem Wesen und Aktivitäten, die hauptsächlich in der "Ilias" und der "Odyssee" des Homer beschrieben sind, beschäftigen. Des Weiteren werde ich näher auf die Herkunft und Entwicklung des Kultes eingehen und dabei auch den frühen Artemis - Kult in Kleinasien ausführlicher beschreiben. Zudem werde ich auch die Kultorte und Riten der Artemis in der griechischen Antike darlegen. Die verwendete Literatur ist Sekundärliteratur, es werden aber auch Zitate aus einer Übersetzung des Homer Eingang finden. Bei der Sichtung der Literatur fällt auf, dass sich sehr viele Werke vor allem mit dem Artemis - Kult im kleinasiatischen Ephesos beschäftigen und die griechische Göttin Artemis weniger ausführlich behandelt wird. Möglicherweise hat dies seinen Ursprung in der Bedeutung des ephesischen Artemis - Tempels als eines der sieben Weltwunder. Daher werde ich mich bei der Betrachtung der griechischen Göttin Artemis vor allem auf den Neuen Pauly und die Realencyclopädie der Classischen Altertumswissenschaften stützen, wobei hierbei allerdings zumeist aus dem Neuen Pauly zitiert wird, da viele Informationen der Realencyclopädie dort verständlicher beschrieben werden. Daneben ist auch das Internet in begrenztem Maße als Quelle nützlich, da ich hier einige Informationen finden konnte, die in Büchern nur unzureichend oder ausschweifend behandelt werden. Verfasst wird diese Arbeit in der neuen deutschen Rechtschreibung, wobei sowohl direkte Zitate als auch Eigennamen keine Änderung erfahren.
