This book is a critique of Artificial Intelligence (AI) from the perspective of cognitive science – it seeks to examine what we have learned about human cognition from AI successes and failures. The book's goal is to separate those 'AI dreams' that either have been or could be realized from those that are constructed through discourse and are unrealizable. AI research has advanced many areas that are intellectually compelling and holds great promise for advances in science, engineering, and practical systems. After the 1980s, however, the field has often struggled to deliver widely on these promises. This book breaks new ground by analyzing how some of the driving dreams of people practicing AI research become valued contributions, while others devolve into unrealized and unrealizable projects.

Machine Dreaming and Consciousness is the first book to discuss the questions raised by the advent of machine dreaming. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems meeting criteria of primary and self-reflexive consciousness are often utilized to extend the human interface, creating waking experiences that resemble the human dream. Surprisingly, AI systems also easily meet all human-based operational criteria for dreaming. These “dreams are far different from anthropomorphic dreaming, including such processes as fuzzy logic, liquid illogic, and integration instability, all processes that may be necessary in both biologic and artificial systems to extend creative capacity. Today, multi-linear AI systems are being built to resemble the structural framework of the human central nervous system. The creation of the biologic framework of dreaming (emotions, associative memories, and visual imagery) is well within our technical capacity. AI dreams potentially portend the further development of consciousness in these systems. This focus on AI dreaming raises even larger questions. In many ways, dreaming defines our humanity. What is humanly special about the states of dreaming? And what are we losing when we limit our focus to its technical and biologic structure, and extend the capacity for dreaming into our artificial creations? Machine Dreaming and Consciousness provides thorough discussion of these issues for neuroscientists and other researchers investigating consciousness and cognition. Addresses the function and role of dream-like processing in AI systems Describes the functions of dreaming in the creative process of both humans and machines Presents an alternative approach to the philosophy of machine consciousness Provides thorough discussion of machine dreaming and consciousness for neuroscientists and other researchers investigating consciousness and cognition

Logistics Of Dreaming written by Jerry Nelson and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-07-13 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

Mother Nature is in the business of writing software programs in DNA. Dreaming is our software program, and it is also how early Homo sapiens learned logic and the use of tools. Author Jerry DC Nelson is neither a scientist, a doctor, nor a physiologist-just an engineer with a bottomless thirst for details on how everything works. When some of his dreams became intriguing, Nelson began to wonder why we dream. What makes us dream, and how do we dream? During Nelson's search for answers, he interviewed friends, read books and articles on the dreaming brain, and watched television programs pertaining to the functions of the brain. In all his research, he never found any satisfactory answers to the question of why we have these wonderful, unique, strange, and bizarre dreams. Then, after recording hundreds of dreams, he started to see particular patterns emerging, which lead him to formulate several theories. When Mother Nature was worked into the equation, everything fell into place. After having recorded more than 4,000 dreams and conducted many years of research, Nelson is confident that he has enough detailed information to back up his theories on why we dream. Logistics of Dreaming is his way of sharing some of Mother Nature's brilliancies concerning the dreaming brain.

Beyond Artificial Intelligence written by Jan Romportl and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-11 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book is an edited collection of chapters based on the papers presented at the conference “Beyond AI: Artificial Dreams” held in Pilsen in November 2012. The aim of the conference was to question deep-rooted ideas of artificial intelligence and cast critical reflection on methods standing at its foundations. Artificial Dreams epitomize our controversial quest for non-biological intelligence and therefore the contributors of this book tried to fully exploit such a controversy in their respective chapters, which resulted in an interdisciplinary dialogue between experts from engineering, natural sciences and humanities. While pursuing the Artificial Dreams, it has become clear that it is still more and more difficult to draw a clear divide between human and machine. And therefore this book tries to portrait such an image of what lies beyond artificial intelligence: we can see the disappearing human-machine divide, a very important phenomenon of nowadays technological society, the phenomenon which is often uncritically praised, or hypocritically condemned. And so this phenomenon found its place in the subtitle of the whole volume as well as in the title of the chapter of Kevin Warwick, one of the keynote speakers at “Beyond AI: Artificial Dreams”.

Can robots dream? Do they experience human emotions like fear and ethical dilemmas? They do, if, like André, the year is 2101 and domestic humanoids―programmed to take care of owners' health and wellbeing―use their built-in artificial intelligence to learn and acquire advanced human social skills.André, a smart, domestic humanoid living on Earth becomes abandoned, hunted, and distraught over the mysterious disappearance of his owner and mentor, Clem Wellman. Why has Clem been kidnapped and his family annihilated? André decides he must impersonate a human in order to investigate the treacherous intrigues of weaponized corporate cities. Clem was at one time an inventor, a retired engineer quietly living in Mesa Charter City. Andre is his devoted friend and employee.Andre lives in fear of being discovered and disassembled into his component mechanical parts―ignoring his advanced acquisition of AI emotional feelings and what he experiences as his quintessential soul. The reader is transported into the mind of a 22nd Century android as he struggles with his understanding of consciousness, self-awareness, and the will to survive. In his quest to save his owner, Andre faces renegade robots, arms dealers, evil oligarchs and their malicious minions, driving him to align support with his old friends from Dream Hackers. This is a story, told from the perspective of a robot, about the future of artificial intelligence, our society, and how humans manage to mismanage their interactions. Today, we believe we master machines. In 2101, they may master us.Robot Dreams is the sequel to my best selling book, Dream Hackers; however, it is not a prerequisite of reading the original to enjoy the sequel.
