In recent years, the rapid advancement of technology—particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital innovations—has fundamentally transformed every dimension of human society. These developments have not only reshaped our economies and lifestyles but have also raised critical ethical, environmental, and sociological questions. This edited volume, brings together a diverse range of scholarly contributions that explore the intersections between technological progress, sustainable development, and social well-being. The chapters included in this volume reflect contributions from scholars and researchers across India, encompassing disciplines such as Sociology, History, Economics, Political Science, and Liberal Education. The themes range from the role of AI in everyday life and the impact of smart cities on environmental management, to localized frameworks of sustainability, the digital transformation of food systems, and the media's influence on social awareness campaigns. Special emphasis is placed on how Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies can both aid and challenge the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Simultaneously, the ethical frameworks surrounding these innovations are explored to ensure technology serves humanity without compromising core societal values. This book also examines grassroots realities and region-specific concerns—such as sustainable practices in Assam, the digitalization of India’s organic food sector, and menstrual taboos across cultures—providing an inclusive and grounded understanding of the diverse sociocultural contexts in which sustainability must be achieved. I hope that this volume serves not only as a valuable academic resource but also as a catalyst for interdisciplinary dialogue and policy innovation. It is my belief that such collaborative and ethical inquiry is essential to building a more just, equitable, and sustainable society in the face of the 21st century’s challenges. I am grateful to all the contributors who have enriched this volume with their research and insights. Their dedication to critical inquiry and commitment to social change is what makes this collection both timely and transformative.

Against this background, and in order to facilitate a broad discussion on the contribution of IT toward implementing the UN SDGs, this book is being produced. The book gathers inputs from universities, enterprises, and research organizations working on matters related to IT and sustainable development in a variety of contexts. It also provides a platform for the dissemination of information on the latest initiatives, paving the way for technology transfer and networking. Last but not least, a further aim of the book is to present methodological approaches and experiences deriving from case studies and projects, which aims to show how IT may support sustainability efforts in a wide range of settings and contexts. Digital technologies are now widely spread and the variety of tools and methods available today means that they can potentially useful in helping to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). However, the gap between technological innovation and sustainable development applications is quite wide. For instance, it is unclear how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to tackle some of the world’s biggest environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity, and water management. Also, there is a need to highlight how innovative green technologies and their applications in areas such as renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable agriculture may be used and to showcase how technological innovation can lead to more sustainable production and consumption patterns.

This book draws on the expertise of faculty and colleagues at the Balsillie School of International Affairs to both locate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a contribution to the development of global government and to examine the political-institutional and financial challenges posed by the SDGs. The contributors are experts in global governance issues in a broad variety of fields ranging from health, food systems, social policy, migration and climate change. An introductory chapter sets out the broad context of the governance challenges involved, and how individual chapters contribute to the analysis. The book begins by focusing on individual SDGs, examining briefly the background to the particular goal and evaluating the opportunities and challenges (particularly governance challenges) in achieving the goal, as well as discussing how this goal relates to other SDGs. The book goes on to address the broader issues of achieving the set of goals overall, examining the novel financing mechanisms required for an enterprise of this nature, the trade-offs involved (particularly between the urgent climate agenda and the social/economic goals), the institutional arrangements designed to enable the achievement of the goals and offering a critical perspective on the enterprise as a whole. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals makes a distinctive contribution by covering a broad range of individual goals with contributions from experts on governance in the global climate, social and economic areas as well as providing assessments of the overall project - its financial feasibility, institutional requisites, and its failures to tackle certain problems at the core. This book will be of great interest to scholars and students of international affairs, development studies and sustainable development, as well as those engaged in policymaking nationally, internationally and those working in NGOs.

Reimagining Digital Learning for Sustainable Development is a comprehensive playbook for education leaders, policy makers, and other key stakeholders leading the modernization of learning and development in their institutions as they build a high value knowledge economy and prepare learners for jobs that don't yet exist. Currently, nearly every aspect of human activity, including the ways we absorb and apply learning, is influenced by disruptive digital technologies. The jobs available today are no longer predicators of future employment, and current and future workforce members will need to augment their competencies through a lifetime of continuous upskilling and reskilling to meet the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This book features curated insights and real-world cases from thought leaders throughout the world and identifies major shifts in content formats, pedagogic approaches, technology frameworks, user and design experiences, and learner roles and expectations that will reshape our institutions, including those in emerging economies. The agile, lean, and cost-effective strategies proposed here will function in scalable and flexible bandwidth environments, enabling education leaders and practitioners to transform brick-and-mortar learning organizations into digital and blended ecosystems and to achieve the United Nation’s ambitious Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
