Il magistero pedagogico di Jacques Copeau si è sviluppato attorno al concetto di “rinnovamento dell’uomo nel teatro”; proprio per questo la sua pedagogia teatrale è stata molto importante per aprire la riflessione sul teatro come strumento, tra etica ed estetica, per educare alla creatività. Il testo analizza la Scuola del Vieux Colombier e l’esperienza del Teatro Popolare dei Copiaus e ricostruisce il progetto educativo di Copeau come fonte per la ricerca del Teatro-Educazione. Lo studio, infatti, si confronta con le teoretiche e le metodologie dell’Educazione alla Teatralità in un’analisi che vuole mettere in luce i punti di contatto e di continuità tra i due pensieri. Nel percorso di Jacques Copeau il teatro è diventato pedagogia, aprendosi ad una nuova prospettiva che vede nell’espressione artistica non solo un fine ma un mezzo. L’Educazione alla Teatralità riprende queste considerazioni ponendosi in un’ottica di ricerca e superamento delle stesse: le intuizioni del maestro francese vengono, infatti, rimesse in gioco attraverso una sperimentazione a carattere scientifico che dal teatro si apre ai concetti di “teatralità” ed “arti espressive” e si confronta con le Scienze Umane sul concetto di «attore-persona» e di «arte come veicolo» per la formazione, la crescita e l’espressione dell’uomo.

Etienne Decroux and His Theatre Laboratory is based on the long-awaited translation of Marco De Marinis' monumental work on mime in the twentieth century: Mimo e teatro nel Novecento (1993). Now revised and updated, the volume focuses specifically on the seminal role played by French mime artist and pedagogue Etienne Decroux. Mime is a theatrical form of ancient tradition. In the nineteenth century, it saw both apogee and crisis in the west with the realistic and gesticulating 'white pantomime'. In the twentieth century, it underwent a radical overhaul, transforming into an 'abstract' corporeal art that shunned imitation and narrative, and which instead tended towards the plastic, elliptic, allusive, and symbolic transposition of actions and situations. This book is the result of detailed investigations, based on contemporary accounts and obscure or unpublished materials. Through the examination of the creative, pedagogical, and theoretical work of the 'inventor' of the new mime art, Etienne Decroux, De Marinis focuses on the different assumptions underlying the various modes of the problematic presence of mime in the theatre of the twentieth century: from the utopia of a 'pure' theatre, attributed to the sole essence of the actor, to its decline into a closed poetic genre often nostalgically stuck in the past; from mime as a pedagogical tool for the actor to mime as an expressive and virtuosic means in the hands of the director.

Andare alla ricerca delle radici dell’Educazione alla Teatralità significa ritornare indietro nel tempo fino agli inizi del Novecento e rispolverare tutti i profondi cambiamenti che hanno caratterizzato il teatro di questo secolo. Il laboratorio teatrale, infatti, nasce da qui, da un’azione teatrale che prende le distanze dal suo stesso mondo in cui non si riconosce più. Essa cerca un rinnovamento che porti a stravolgere il teatro divistico centrato sulla recitazione enfatica dell’attore e che liberi, al tempo stesso, il teatro dalla schiavitù in cui si è visto costretto dalla metà dell’Ottocento in poi. Si cerca un’azione, quindi, che sia in grado di restituire al teatro quella dignità che gli è stata tolta nel momento in cui è stato assoggettato ai vincoli della produzione e che ricostruisca uno stretto legame con la società dalla quale ormai da tempo l’uomo si era allontanato. Il Novecento rappresenta tutto questo e lo fa attraverso nuovi percorsi che cercano di ridare senso ad un mondo divenuto ormai sterile e di riportare al centro ciò che veramente è importante e arricchisce di significato il teatro. L’attore-persona si riscopre in quanto uomo con tutta la consapevolezza del suo essere e del suo esprimere e attraverso questo percorso ritrova senso anche la relazione con gli altri compagni e con gli spettatori. Tutti questi cambiamenti, naturalmente, non sono avvenuti da soli, ma hanno avuto alla base grandi personaggi che sono stati capaci di fermarsi e guardare con occhio critico ciò che stava avvenendo e da lì partire, in controcorrente, per cercare nuove strade da percorrere.
