Ted Lambert is regarded as one of the premier Alaska artists, a true pioneer. Born in 1905, and raised in the Chicago area, Lambert moved to Alaska in 1925 and went to work as a miner near McCarthy. He held several jobs, predominantly working at a copper mine and mushing dogs—first for adventure, and then as a mail carrier. Lambert left Alaska in 1931 to study art for a year at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, then moved to Seattle, where he began a mentorship under Eustace Ziegler, with whom he traveled throughout Alaska and painted. Eventually Lambert settled down in Fairbanks, where he stayed for twenty years and solidified his reputation as a painter and an artist. But in 1960 he disappeared from the remote cabin he was living in at Bristol Bay. No trace of his body was ever found, but among the effects rescued from his last home was a memoir of his early days in Alaska. Presented here and never before published, these memoirs reveal Lambert to be a keen and intelligent observer and relay the adventure story of a young man who would become one of Alaska’s most important artists.

This book is about my cousin Ted Lewy, who came to San Francisco and fell in love with the city, and the city embraced his colorful paintings. Ted Lewy was born on September 4th in the year 1912, in a small town called Schubin in West Prussia, that was part of the German Empire before the start of World War I. Schubin was less than a small town. It was more like a village with a river crossing right through the middle, with a group of small houses on one side of the river and a two story school with a red roof on the other side. The children had to cross a little wooden bridge every day to go to school. Many times a horse or two, pulling a wagon full of hay was almost occupying the entire bridge. This can be seen on many of the oil paintings that Ted has done from memory of his childhood. On one he even has two children with school packs on their back on the wooden bridge. Might they be Ted and his older brother Arthur ?. After the end of the war, the Allies, at the Treaty of Versailles, established the League of Nations, and the Imperial German Government was made to pay reparation and give up parts of land under their control. This included ceding Upper Silesia to Czechoslovakia, Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France and Prussia to Poland. Thus many Germans, including German Jews, went west to the mainland of Germany to settle there. The family of Ted Lewy also moved back to Germany, to the city of Hamburg. Ted was 7 years old. He had a three year older brother. Arthur and a year younger sister Ruth. In Hamburg, Ted went to one year Grammar and nine years High School. Graduated and went two years to a Business College. After that, attended an Art School for a year and a half. I guess it was the system for that time. After Schooling, he worked for a department store, designing window displays, making posters, and after some time, even managed to setup a small private studio. Some photographs of the German posters still exit.

A Journey Through Art is indeed a journey. This masterpiece of illustrated drawings and paintings by the architect, TED KNAPP, AIA, is not only a journey of the history of his experiences but an adventure in artistic growth throughout his creative career. The body of work displayed within the pages of this book is a reflection of Ted's life, spanning from his formative years to his retirement from his very successful architectural practice. The landscapes, represented throughout this "journey" which are captured with the pencil sketches and oil paintings, are obviously meaningful to Ted. He demonstrates throughout this document, the basic language of artists including color theory, composition, balance and harmony. Knapp's artistic skills come from strong building blocks that give life to his paintings and pencil sketches. Growing up on a farm with close ties to the natural beauty of the land provides a basic background in his artistic capture of the rural landscape (see "Coffey County"; page 16). The study of architecture, along with a lifelong career as an architect, was valuable to his capturing the proper perspective of urban scenes in his art ("Parliament"; page 67). Ted Knapp's professional career as a theater architect enabled Ted and his wife Sue to travel abroad extensively and this is evident within the pages of this document. Numerous scenes from Asia to Europe serve as a travelogue of such expeditions by Ted and Sue. Explorations of scenic areas of the United States also are celebrated throughout this body of work as well. The exposition of American scenery is specifically scaled between the Grand Canyon at one end of the spectrum to his own neighborhood at the other. He seems to be at home throughout the expośe. You'll find informative narratives accompanying the works of art throughout that add meaning to the portfolio. I'm sure you'll find your journey throughout the book as delightful as I do.

This book is the first-ever publication of works by artist Ted Drover, accompanied by text providing contextual background for the aspect of the history of Newfoundland and Labrador that each drawing represents. Ted Drover's personal papers indicate that it had been his intention to publish a book "of seagoing crafts engaged in the fishery and general commerce of the island of Newfoundland and Labrador from about 1850 to 1950 . . . starting with wind-powered ships and developing through sailing ships with auxiliary power to ships powered with steam and internal combustion." The drawings which have been included in this collection are authentic depictions of vessels which plied the waters around this island and beyond, connecting place to place, and people to each other and to the larger world. They represent a lifestyle which has all but disappeared. More than thirty of Ted Drover's works were donated to the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador by the artist and are held at The Rooms. Although they are rarely on display for public viewing, they are accessible to researchers for study.
