The exhibition The Promise of Total Automation at the Kunsthalle Wien (vienna, 2016) investigated our relationship to a world of machines, technological objects, and electronic devices. The prospect of a fully automated futurewhile acutely reshaping the notions of work, production, and value creationfeeds emancipatory scenarios that ultimately lead to the end of labor. Instead of offering a traditional record of the exhibition, the curators investigated books written on the subject and then reproduced their covers. The result is a fascinating bibliography and chronology of automation as seen across the twentieth century through the covers of books and their authors. Included artists are Athanasios Argianas, Zbynek Baladrn, Thomas Bayrle, James Benning, Bureau dtudes, Steven Claydon, Tyler Coburn, Philippe Decrauzat and Alan Licht, Harry Dodge, Juan Downey, Ccile B. evans, Judith fegerl, Melanie Gilligan, Peter Halley, Channa Horwitz, Geumhyung Jeong, David Jourdan, Barbara Kapusta, Konrad Klapheck, Bela Kolrov, nick Laessing, Mark Leckey, Tobias Madison and emanuel Rossetti, Benot Maire, Mark Manders, Daria Martin, Shawn Maximo, Rgis Mayot, Wesley Meuris, Gerald nestler, Henrik Olesen, Julien Prvieux, and Magali Reus.

The title 'But We Loved Her' was taken from a picture in the April 17 2013 issue of the British newspaper The Independent the day Margaret Thatcher was interred. The London-based artist collected all the newspaper articles in the days that followed Thatcher's death, progammatically positioning these four words at the forefront of her exhibition in Vienna, and in a phase of her work that foregrounds questions about the opportunities offers by neoliberal identity, about consumer culture in a post-capitalist society, and about their precursors.

A panoramic global history of the nineteenth century A monumental history of the nineteenth century, The Transformation of the World offers a panoramic and multifaceted portrait of a world in transition. Jürgen Osterhammel, an eminent scholar who has been called the Braudel of the nineteenth century, moves beyond conventional Eurocentric and chronological accounts of the era, presenting instead a truly global history of breathtaking scope and towering erudition. He examines the powerful and complex forces that drove global change during the "long nineteenth century," taking readers from New York to New Delhi, from the Latin American revolutions to the Taiping Rebellion, from the perils and promise of Europe's transatlantic labor markets to the hardships endured by nomadic, tribal peoples across the planet. Osterhammel describes a world increasingly networked by the telegraph, the steamship, and the railways. He explores the changing relationship between human beings and nature, looks at the importance of cities, explains the role slavery and its abolition played in the emergence of new nations, challenges the widely held belief that the nineteenth century witnessed the triumph of the nation-state, and much more. This is the highly anticipated English edition of the spectacularly successful and critically acclaimed German book, which is also being translated into Chinese, Polish, Russian, and French. Indispensable for any historian, The Transformation of the World sheds important new light on this momentous epoch, showing how the nineteenth century paved the way for the global catastrophes of the twentieth century, yet how it also gave rise to pacifism, liberalism, the trade union, and a host of other crucial developments.

A critical exploration of the transformation of urban space through platform technologies such as Uber and Airbnb This collection of essays explores the ongoing transformation of urban spaces brought about by platform technologies. Digital platforms such as Facebook, Uber, Airbnb and Amazon are not only new kinds of business enterprise but also produce a completely new culture--from the products and services we use every day to entire urban neighborhoods that will be built by major platform enterprises in the coming years. By reorganizing access to a wide spectrum of fundamental domains, such as education, housing, health care or even political information, platforms are destined to become the most powerful players in regulating how we inhabit cities. These multi-scalar changes raise significant questions about the social potentials and risks of the architecture of these all-encompassing ecosystems. Authors Peter Moertenboeck and Helge Mooshammer are codirectors of the Centre for Global Architecture, an interdisciplinary initiative established to study the planetary changes affecting spatial production today.

Today, artists are engaged in investigation. They probe corruption, state violence, environmental destruction and repressive technologies. At the same time, fields not usually associated with aesthetics make powerful use of it. Journalists and legal professionals pore over open source videos and satellite imagery to undertake visual investigations. This combination of diverse fields is what the authors call "investigative aesthetics": mobilising sensibilities often associated with art, architecture and other such practices to find new ways of speaking truth to power. This book draws on theories of knowledge, ecology and technology, evaluates the methods of citizen counter-forensics, micro-history and art, and examines radical practices such as those of Wikileaks, Bellingcat, and Forensic Architecture. Investigative Aesthetics takes place in the studio and the laboratory, the courtroom and the gallery, online and in the streets, as it strives towards the construction of a new 'common sensing'. The book is an inspiring introduction to a new field that brings together investigation and aesthetics to change how we understand and confront power today.
