Alors que les artistes suscitent et illustrent en permanence de nouvelles valeurs, les politiques entendent d’abord diffuser celles qui servent leurs objectifs. Quand que les artistes fonctionnent à l’autonomie vis-à-vis des composantes de la société, les politiques fonctionnent à l’hétéronomie. Si le politique donne la priorité au contenu sur la forme, l’artiste recherche un équilibre entre forme et contenu. Le travail sur la forme apparaît comme l’essence de l’activité artistique et un lieu possible de séparation entre artistes et politiques, même lorsqu’ils partagent un projet commun. Le problème n’est plus alors de savoir si un art est beau ou pas, s’il conforte ou pas, mais de constater que cette tension traduit deux mises en perspectives différentes de la société et de ses mouvements. Parce que cette analyse part ici de situations exceptionnelles, elle va au cœur de la relation entre les artistes et les politiques, que le monde des arts soit régulé par la religion, l’académie, la subvention ou le marché."

This timely collection examines the contemporary arts as political practice, offering critical insight into some of the more controversial talking points that have shaped Singapore’s identity as a nation. Focusing on the role played by contemporary arts in shaping Singapore’s political landscape as the country celebrated 50 years of independence in 2015, the authors consider how politics is often perceived as that which limits the flourishing of the arts. Contending that all art is political, and that all art form is a form of political practice, this collection examines ways in which the practice of art in Singapore redraws the boundaries that conventionally separate arts from politics. It critically examines the tenuous relationship between the arts and politics and offers a timely reevaluation of the relationship between the arts and politics.
