Abel Arumugam has been a General Surgeon for about 40 years, working in and around Malaysia. In this book he has chronicled his life’s journey in different chapters. It tells of his failures and successes with honesty and candour. It has been a labour of love that he hopes you will enjoy reading. Reviewes : “Dr. Arumugams’s scalpel is indeed sharp, but not as sharp as his wit, and unlike the unforgiving finality of a surgical “slice”, his slice of humour brings chuckles always, guffaws sometimes, and rarely death threats from the Subject of his jokes. But then…… he has the scalpel for his defence!” Prof Alka Sinha Ganesh Professor of Medicine Christian Medical College, Vellore , India Reading Abel Arumugam’s personal journey in ‘The Scalpel Writes’, one is reminded of Dorothy Springs’s quotation “ Life is like a camera - just focus on what’s important , capture the good times, develop from negatives and if things don’t work out just take another shot”. Abel is jovial, carefree and fun loving and his focus in life is his family, numerous close friends and his surgical career. The ‘snap shots’ capture the good times in all these and his narratives are portrayed in fun, immense love and with enthusiasm. No mention of any negatives to develop from and he does not say what he did if things did not work out – I suppose, as usual, he just ordered another shot!! Tears and Fears is a collection of poems written by Dr Puva Arumugam over a twenty year period. Puva's works have always been directed at being a a voice of the marginalised and women in particular. The poems in this collection are not literary works but tears that have been transformed into words as they landed on paper. They represent fears about the pain that relationships bring. You would hear the sound of ripped hearts, smashed hopes, crushed love and punctured faith when love and friendship comes to an end. But not all the poems depict gloom and doom as the Puva does believe that true love is out there somewhere!

Since the early 1990s hundreds of thousands of Tamil villagers in southern India have participated in literacy lessons, science demonstrations, and other events designed to transform them into active citizens with access to state power. These efforts to spread enlightenment among the oppressed are part of a movement known as the Arivoli Iyakkam (the Enlightenment Movement), considered to be among the most successful mass literacy movements in recent history. In The Light of Knowledge, Francis Cody’s ethnography of the Arivoli Iyakkam highlights the paradoxes inherent in such movements that seek to emancipate people through literacy when literacy is a power-laden social practice in its own right. The Light of Knowledge is set primarily in the rural district of Pudukkottai in Tamil Nadu, and it is about activism among laboring women from marginalized castes who have been particularly active as learners and volunteers in the movement. In their endeavors to remake the Tamil countryside through literacy activism, workers in the movement found that their own understanding of the politics of writing and Enlightenment was often transformed as they encountered vastly different notions of language and imaginations of social order. Indeed, while activists of the movement successfully mobilized large numbers of rural women, they did so through logics that often pushed against the very Enlightenment rationality they hoped to foster. Offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at an increasingly important area of social and political activism, The Light of Knowledge brings tools of linguistic anthropology to engage with critical social theories of the postcolonial state.

Lin Tang, a scholar, anonymous and destitute in medieval China...Ashok Cushman dying (or already dead) in the mountains in a contemporary but an imagined Australia...and Vyas, a sanyasin in medieval India on a journey millions of wanderers have taken and continue to take - these three characters in the tales that form SATORI each experience moments of insight, of illumination. The tales offer readers satori of their own, as they follow the three characters on their various journeys. "SATORI" is designed to be a personal experience of insight even as each of the three tales engages the readers in its narrative.
