This book gives an account of the creative work of theorists at the largest Soviet secret laboratory, now the Russian Federal Nuclear Center at Arzamas-16, and concrete situations where some famous results on the essentials of theoretical physics emerged, so to speak, in the intermissions of the quest for bombs. The collection contains about 30 papers with brief comments. Some of them have received international recognition. But few people can conceive where they were written, since the publication of a paper by a secret physicist in a Soviet journal was supported by fictitious affiliations. Other papers are less well known, particularly because Soviet journals were not always translated into European languages. However, pioneer results contained in them merit more attention.

Everyone knows about Los Alamos - the 'secret city' in New Mexico, where the first atomic bomb was developed. But very few people have even heard of Arzamas-16, home of the Russian bomb. Located 200 miles east of Moscow, Arzamas-16 is so secret that it has never appeared on any Soviet map. For nearly half a century, Soviet and American nuclear physicists worked in isolation from each other: partly in fear, partly in admiration, and with the ultimate goal of mutual destruction. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, new fears led to an extraordinary collaboration between scientists at Los Alamos and Arzamas-16 who, with US funding, are working desperately to contain the new nuclear threat: the instability of ageing weapons, and the theft of nuclear material. Stephen Trombley gained unique access to Arzamas-16 and Los Alamos. For the past three years he has gone 'behind the fence' with the scientists who have created the latest generation of nuclear weapons, to learn first hand of the new and mortal dangers we face.

This report reviews the ISTC's objectives and plans, discussed its activities with U.S. and FSU officials, and met with FSU grant recipients and institute directors. The committee concludes that during its first two years the ISTC was successful and effective in meeting its primary objective, which, in turn, has contributed to the larger goal of diminishing the risk of weapons proliferation. Moreover, the opportunities provided to FSU scientists and engineers do indeed offer meaningful nonweapons-related work, which helps address the demoralization that may otherwise contribute to scientists' being lured into work for unfriendly governments. The committee believes the ISTC has also been successful in addressing its secondary objectivesâ€"namely, the solution of national and international technical problems; the support of basic and applied research and technology development for peaceful purposes; and, to a lesser degree, reinforcement of the transition of the FSU to a market-driven economy.

Inventing Los Alamos written by Jon Hunner and has been published by University of Oklahoma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-04 with History categories.

A social history of New Mexico’s “Atomic City” Los Alamos, New Mexico, birthplace of the Atomic Age, is the community that revolutionized modern weaponry and science. An “instant city,” created in 1943, Los Alamos quickly grew to accommodate six thousand people—scientists and experts who came to work in the top-secret laboratories, others drawn by jobs in support industries, and the families. How these people, as a community, faced both the fevered rush to create an atomic bomb and the intensity of the subsequent cold-war era is the focus of Jon Hunner’s fascinating narrative history. Much has been written about scientific developments at Los Alamos, but until this book little has been said about the community that fostered them. Using government records and the personal accounts of early residents, Inventing Los Alamos, traces the evolution of the town during its first fifteen years as home to a national laboratory and documents the town’s creation, the lives of the families who lived there, and the impact of this small community on the Atomic Age.
