This volume employs new empirical data to examine the internationalization of the social sciences and humanities (SSH). While the globalization dynamics that have transformed the shape of the world over the last decades has been the subject of a growing number of scientific studies, very few such studies have set out to analyze the globalization of social and human sciences themselves. Arguing against the complacent assumption that Science is ‘international by nature’, this work demonstrates that the growing circulation of scholars and scientific ideas is a complex, contradictory and contested process. Arranged thematically, the chapters in this volume present a coherent exploration of patterns of transnationalization, South-North and East-West exchanges, and transnational regionalization. Further, they offer fresh insight into specific topics including the influence of the Anglo-American research infrastructure and the development of social and human sciences in postcolonial contexts. This book looks at the development of thinking about security in Brazil between 1930 and 2010. In order to do so, it develops a new framework for thinking about intellectual history in Brazil and applies it to the development of knowledge on security in that country. Building on the Gramscian literature on ‘late modernization’ and ‘conservative revolution’ and drawing on the idea of ‘Emotional Theory of Action’ proposed by Brazilian sociologist Jessé Souza, this book sets out to establish an innovative framework with which to analyse the development of ‘thinking about security’ in Brazil in three specific historic contexts. This theoretical framework is then used to argue that one specific discourse of Brazilian identity has been the main source of knowledge production in that country since the 1930s. In doing this, the book offers thought-provoking arguments about the role of intellectuals in Brazil and reassesses the exclusionary ideas embedded in the politics of identity and security. This book not only introduces a novel framework to analyse intellectual production outside the core, it also sheds light on how security has been historically thought of outside the core and will be of interest to students and scholars of International Relations, Critical Security Studies and Latin American Studies.

Academic autonomy has been a dominant issue among Latin American social studies, given that the production of knowledge in the region has been mostly suspected for its lack of originality and the replication of Euro-American models. Politicization within the higher education system and recurrent military interventions in universities have been considered the main structural causes for this heteronomy and, thus, the main obstacles for 'scientific' achievements. This groundbreaking book analyses the struggle for academic autonomy taking into account the relevant differences between the itinerary of social and natural sciences, the connection of institutionalization and prestige-building, professionalization and engagement. From the perspective of the periphery, academic dependence is not merely a vertical bond that ties active producers and passive reproducers. Even though knowledge produced in peripheral communities has low rates of circulation within the international academic system, this doesn't imply that their production is - or always has been - the result of a massive import of foreign concepts and resources. This book intends to show that the main differences between mainstream academies and peripheral circuits are not precisely in the lack of indigenous thinking, but in the historical structure of academic autonomy, which changes according to a set of factors -mainly the role of the state in the higher education system. This historical structure explains the particular features of the process of professionalization in Latin American scientific fields.

Este livro explica que Maquiavel, ao contrário do que ainda se lê pelo Brasil, não foi maquiavélico, não foi um "professor do mal", mas um "pensador do mal", nunca escreveu que fins justificam meios, nunca defendeu a manutenção do poder a qualquer custo. É um autor complexo e, como autores complexos, vítima de simplificações redutivas e de algumas traduções levianas de sua obra em língua portuguesa. Maquiavel, sobretudo em O Príncipe, é um pensador preocupado com a "verdade efetiva da coisa", e não com "a imaginação que se tem sobre ela". Maquiavel manifesta em O Príncipe uma preocupação metodológica, descritiva das coisas sociais. Busca a compreensão do que Émile Durkheim chamará de fato social. Para Bento, Maquiavel é o pesquisador do fato político, coisa política, que separa a idealidade da realidade da coisa política. Neste ponto, ele identifica intenções metodológicas semelhantes entre Maquiavel e Durkheim, em seu livro As Regras do Método Sociológico (1895). Maquiavel preocupa-se com a construção da ordem política de uma Itália ainda não unificada. Para ele, um príncipe deve construir e manter a ordem política, mas não afirma que isso deva ser a qualquer custo. Identifica a complexidade de tal tarefa que se realiza no caldeirão dos valores morais tradicionais. Este, porém, não é um livro somente sobre Maquiavel, mas sobre o método específico que se identifica com a própria sociologia no estudo da sociedade moderna. Um livro que destaca a centralidade e complexidade dos fatos sociais e as conexões que os fatos criam entre si (conexões fáticas). Um livro com reflexões sobre fatos em forma de conflitos sociais (Karl Marx), anomia (Émile Durkheim), racionalização (Max Weber).
